Intro to the state—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.
Summary
Maryland offers a diverse hunting experience, drawing enthusiasts to its varied landscapes that range from coastal plains to rolling hills and dense forests. The state is renowned for its abundant game species, including whitetail deer, wild turkey, and migrating waterfowl, making it a prime destination for both novice and seasoned hunters. Maryland's unique position along the Atlantic Flyway provides exceptional opportunities for waterfowl hunting, particularly for species such as ducks and geese. Additionally, the state's commitment to conservation and sustainable hunting practices ensures that its natural resources are preserved for future generations. Whether pursuing a trophy deer in the western mountains or enjoying a day of duck hunting on the Eastern Shore, Maryland's rich hunting heritage and breathtaking scenery create an unforgettable outdoor experience.
Maryland’s waterfowl country lies within the Atlantic coastal plain, where a patchwork of leased grain farms—corn, bean and wheat fields—meets vast tidal marshes and freshwater impoundments on nearby wildlife refuges. These open agricultural flats, bordered by seasonally flooded ditches and both tidal and non-tidal waterways, provide ideal feeding and staging areas for snow geese and Canada geese throughout the winter. Concealed pit blinds are dug along field edges or wetland perimeters, and success often hinges on deploying large decoy spreads across these expansive, gently rolling landscapes.
Maryland waterfowl hunts take place across leased grain fields and tidal marshes, with accommodations ranging from field-edge lodges to day-only hunts. Multi-day packages use lodges equipped with comfortable beds and modern climate control, ensuring a restful base between morning and afternoon hunts. Day-hunt options do not include on-site housing, allowing hunters to commute or arrange local lodging. All hunts rely on concealed pit blinds dug along flooded ditches or wetland perimeters and extensive decoy spreads to attract snow and Canada geese. Lodges provide consistent heating and cooling, while pit blinds offer natural insulation against seasonal weather—hunters should dress for the conditions on day hunts without climate-controlled facilities.
We think these three hunts should be at the top of your list:
Canada Goose Hunting in Maryland - Half Day
Due to its large number of grain farms, southern New Jersey and Delaware host some of the largest concentrations of Canada geese in the state. We are surrounded by large bodies of water that hold good concentrations of geese throughout the season. This water is both tidal and non tidal so freeze up is not a problem.
We manage over 9 farms encompassing about 2200 acres in south Jersey and Marylands’ Eastern show which helps ensure no one farm is overgunned. These are all leased farms. All of our hunts are in bean, corn or wheat fields – a favorite of Canada geese. These three crops provide Canada geese the food they love and need throughout the gunning season.
Kevin Popo Guide Service also provides large spreads of today’s top-quality decoys. We use both Big Foot and Real Geese decoys to provide you with the best opportunity of harvesting Canada geese. Depending on the weather and field conditions, these realistic decoys can mean the difference betwwen a good or slow day especially on late season geese. All of our decoys are well maintained and new decoys are bought on an annual basis.
Both our New Jersey Canada goose hunting and Maryland Canada goose hunting is done from large, spacious and well-maintained pits. Our pits are all 16-20 ft long and 6 ft wide to ensure you stay dry and comfortable no matter how bad the weather. You haven’t experienced atrue Canda goose hunt until you have geese literally trying to landing on your head!!.
Some days world-class calling is the difference between a mediocre hunt and a limit hunt. We make the sounds (or notes) needed to have the birds landing right at your feet because we realize you are here to experience a memorable canada goose hunt not to listen to a great caller.

Top Notch Snow Goose Hunting in Maryland - Half Day Hunt
Centrally located between the huge tidal marshes of southern New Jersey and endless cornfields of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Delaware winters close to 500,000 snow geese annually. Delaware is home to two major snow geese roosts- the 16,000 acre Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge (Kent County) and the 9,900 acre Prime Hook Nationals Wildlife refuge. (Sussex County) Combined these refuges host over 400,000 snow geese each fall. Both refuges provide large fresh water impoundments and tidal marshes for snow geese.
We currently lease over 30 farms in Kent and Sussex county. We have farms covering a large area both close to and farther inland from the refuges. Since we have hunted these areas for over twenty years, we have leased only the best farms used by wintering snow geese.
Snow goose hunting requires a huge amount of decoys. We use mostly full bodies and some silo socks. More so than any other waterfowl, huge spreads of decoys are an important part to harvest snow geese. Being on the ‘X” is most important but we have had a lot of good hunts (25-50 birds) just getting under the birds and hunting traffic. 200 decoys was deadly ten years ago but today 1500 – 2000 decoys are needed for those same results.
Your guide will meet you at the hotel or at an assigned place at an assigned time. From the hotel you will follow your guide to the farm. Have your snacks, coffee, and refreshments ready for your morning hunt as we will not be stopping at a convenience store. Everyone will help in setting up the decoy spread. The guide calls all the shots. At the end of the hunt, everyone helps picking up the decoys.

Maryland FAQs
What you need to know before you book:
What type of terrain should I expect when hunting in Maryland?
Maryland’s waterfowl country sits on the Atlantic coastal plain, where leased grain farms blend into tidal marshes and freshwater impoundments. You’ll be set up on open agricultural flats—corn, bean and wheat fields—with gently rolling ground, seasonally flooded ditches and waterways. Pit blinds are dug at field edges or marsh perimeters, giving you a low-profile vantage across these productive feeding and staging areas.
What methods are commonly used to hunt in Maryland?
Most guided hunts rely on concealed pit blinds and extensive decoy spreads to draw in snow and Canada geese. Hunters deploy large numbers of shell decoys along flooded ditches or wetland edges, paired with realistic calling sequences. The layout is designed for both morning and afternoon sessions, and your guide will handle setup, calling and blind placement to match bird movements.
Are hunts in Maryland more on public or private land?
Maryland waterfowl hunts occur on a mix of leased private farmland and adjacent public refuges. Grain fields are privately leased for hunting, while tidal marshes and impoundments fall under wildlife refuge management. This combination gives you access to prime feeding zones on private ground, with nearby public wetlands providing additional staging areas for migratory geese.
