Intro to this species—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.
Summary
The Chukar Partridge (Alectoris chukar) is a game bird renowned for its striking physical appearance and challenging hunting experience. Characterized by its distinctive plumage, which features a blend of gray-brown body with bold black and white markings, the Chukar possesses a unique elongated crest and a vivid red bill that enhances its appeal to hunters. Originating from mountainous regions of Eurasia, this adaptable bird is often found in steep, rocky terrains, making it a challenging but rewarding target for upland bird hunters. Their penchant for running rather than flying when startled means that hunters must employ stealth and strategic approaches, often utilizing trained dogs to flush the birds from their hidden perches. The swift flight patterns and unpredictable behaviors of the Chukar present an exhilarating pursuit, requiring skillful marksmanship and an understanding of their habitat, thereby solidifying their status as a prized game species among avian enthusiasts.
Chukar partridge hunts deliver fast-paced wingshooting across a wide range of terrains—from carefully managed cover crops and mixed grass plantations in the Southeast to steep, high–elevation sagebrush and timbered canyons in the West. Most outings are guided in small groups or one-on-one, featuring well-trained upland dogs to flush birds into the open for flush-and-shoot action. Hunters can expect rugged walking and strategic stand locations, with flushes of hard-flying chukar often mixed with quail, pheasant, or other upland species. Lodging is typically available on-site or nearby, and all field dressing, bird cleaning, and vacuum-sealing services are handled by the guide team. Seasons vary by region—commonly opening in fall and running through late winter—making chukar hunting a rewarding challenge for newcomers and seasoned upland aficionados alike.
Chukar Partridge hunts range from single-day outings with no onsite lodging to multi-day packages that include stays in traditional hunting lodges or nearby hotels. When accommodations are provided, hunters sleep in private rooms or cabins furnished with comfortable beds. Heating and cooling in those facilities is handled through modern climate-control systems. Day-only hunts require no provided housing, allowing participants to travel in and out on the same day.
We think these three hunts should be at the top of your list.

Picturesque Upland Hunt on 300 Acre Preserve - 6 Chukar
Whether it's low, well-managed brush cover, idle cropfields or woodland habitat, we have you covered.
While it would be easy to plant vast fields of grasses and walk away, we know from 50 years of hunting experience that those types of simplistic approaches to creating cover don't work. That's why our main focus at Markover is the careful planning, executing and maintaining rich cover to create the diverse conditions of our hunting fields that generations of hunters have come to expect and enjoy.
Interspersed with patches of native praire grass and intermittent low pines, you'll find our fields to be ideal for full season bird cover.
Most of our off-season at Markover is spent maintaining and establishing our diverse cover. As the seasons pass, you'll find that our ground growth and foliage offerings change while continuing to offer quality bird holding areas that are available all year long without sacrificing huntability.
Picturesque and well-maintained, you'll find the views throughout our fields to be a spectacular addition to your hunting experience.

Chukar Partridge FAQs
What you need to know before you book:
What type of terrain should I expect when hunting chukar partridge?
Chukar partridge hunts cover everything from low‐lying cover crops and mixed‐grass fields in the Southeast to steep, high-elevation sagebrush benches and timbered canyons out West. Plan for a mix of open ground and brush, often on uneven, rugged hillsides that demand steady footing.
What time of year is best for hunting chukar partridge?
Seasons vary by state but generally open in the fall and run through late winter. Early season hunts (October–December) find birds in thicker cover, while cold-weather hunts (January–February) often concentrate chukar into tighter feeding areas.
What methods are commonly used to hunt chukar partridge?
Flush-and-shoot is the go-to approach: well-trained upland dogs range ahead to push birds into the open, where hunters on strategic stands or on the move take fast shots. Most outings are guided in small groups or one-on-one, with field dressing and bird cleaning handled by the guide team.

Epic Grouse Hunting in Utah (Price Per Gun, 2 Gun Minimum)
Utah hunts are offered on a limited basis in October. We offer Blue and Ruffed grouse hunts as well as some chukar. The hunts are based on permit availability for the various National Forest areas of Utah, but we primarily conduct hunts near Spanish Fork or Heber city Utah.
These hunts are challenging and at elevations ranging from 7000 to 10000 feet above sea level. The hiking is a little tough, but all worthwhile when a big Blue gets up.
If you decide to hunt chukar, be prepared. As they say, you hunt them once for sport and every other time is for revenge.
