Intro to this species—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.
Summary
Gambel's Quail (Callipepla gambelii) is a captivating game bird native to the arid regions of the Southwestern United States and parts of Mexico. This small, plump quail is distinguished by its strikingly intricate plumage, featuring soft gray and brown tones accented by bold black and white markings, including a distinctive crescent-shaped crest atop its head. Notably, the males exhibit a striking black throat patch, while females present a more subdued coloration. Hunting Gambel's Quail can be particularly challenging due to their tendency to flush abruptly from dense brush, often scattering in all directions, making each hunt both exhilarating and unpredictable. Recognizing their habitat preferences, which typically include desert shrublands and areas rich in cover, is key for successful hunts. Hunters often use well-trained dogs to help locate and retrieve these birds, enhancing the overall experience while contributing to effective management of this desirable game species.
Gambel’s Quail hunts in Arizona showcase fast-paced, on‐foot upland bird adventures across Sonoran Desert flats, washes, and foothill canyons. Guided outings—often one guide to one or small groups—pair you with locally based professionals and trained pointing dogs to locate and flush coveys efficiently. Hunts are typically arranged near lodging that puts you close to the birds, with all field fees, guide services, dog support, and bird cleaning included. While Southern Arizona offers the broadest Gambel’s Quail habitat, northern and central hunts are available for pure Gambel’s pursuits, and combination packages can add Scaled and Mearns quail for a full “Arizona Quail Slam.”
Gambel’s Quail hunts are typically based out of comfortable hotel accommodations located near prime quail country. Lodgings feature private rooms with standard beds and modern climate-control systems to keep you comfortable throughout early-season mornings and warmer afternoons. Most packages include some meals or field-ready snacks, either served at the hotel or provided in the field. With hotels situated close to hunting areas, you’ll enjoy quick access to morning outings and return each evening to a well-appointed, climate-controlled room.
We think these three hunts should be at the top of your list.
3-Specials Wild Quail Hunt in Arizona (Single Hunter)
Arizona is our bread and butter. It’s where we started, where we live, train, and scout the most. Our Arizona upland hunts are primarily based in Southern Arizona and we focus on the three species of quail located there - Gambels, Scaled, and Mearns quail.
We also conduct some hunts in northern and central Arizona as requested, but those are only for Gambels quail. We will recommend a lodging location based on the species you desire to hunt. Arizona is our home turf. All of our guides are local to the area and know this quail country extremely well. We spend more time scouting and finding new pockets of birds than any other service in the area. Our Arizona quail hunts are second to none.
If you desire the “Arizona quail Slam” (All three species) we are happy to accommodate that as well.

Gambel's Quail FAQs
What you need to know before you book:
How challenging is it to hunt Gambel’s Quail?
Gambel’s Quail hunting is moderately challenging. You’ll cover several miles of desert flats, washes and foothill canyons each day, walking at a steady pace while working with a pointing dog. Terrain is generally level to rolling, but sandy soil and brush can slow you down. Hunts are guided in small groups, so the pace can be adjusted for most fitness levels.
What methods are commonly used to hunt Gambel’s Quail?
Gambel’s Quail are most often hunted on foot with a well-trained pointing dog. The dog locates and holds point on coveys, then you move in to flush birds into the air for a clean shotgun shot. Some outfitters use drives or strategic cut-flushing lines, but pointer-driven upland techniques are the standard.
What time of year is best for hunting Gambel’s Quail?
Prime Gambel’s Quail season in Arizona runs from late fall through winter, typically November through February. Cooler temperatures concentrate birds around reliable water and cover, and breeding season movements haven’t yet begun, so coveys remain tight and predictable.
