Intro to this species—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.
Summary
The black scoter is a smaller sea duck with an all-black body and subtle orange knob on the male’s bill. This species favors coastal bays, inlets, and nearshore waters where it feeds on shellfish and aquatic invertebrates. Black scoters typically fly low over the water in tight flocks, offering fast-paced shooting opportunities. Sea duck hunters pursue them from boats or shore blinds, often alongside other scoter species.
Black Scoter hunts along the Atlantic Flyway run from November through January and adjust yearly to migration timing and weather. Outings are typically small, boat-based experiences—often capped at three hunters per guide—featuring decoy spreads, layout blinds or benches, and safety briefings for an efficient open-water wing-shooting setup. Hunters can expect fast-paced action in coastal estuaries and nearshore waters where large flocks of Scoters, Surf Scoters, and other sea ducks congregate. Guided trips include permits, transportation, and field-dressing services, making these hunts accessible and rewarding for both newcomers and seasoned wingshooters.
Black Scoter hunts are conducted as guided day trips, with no overnight lodging or sleeping arrangements provided. Hunters return to their own accommodations each evening and should plan accordingly. Meals are not included, and there are no dedicated heating or cooling facilities supplied during the hunt. Participants are responsible for bringing appropriate clothing, personal comfort items, and arranging their own accommodations and meals.
We think these three hunts should be at the top of your list.

Black Scoter FAQs
What you need to know before you book:
What type of terrain should I expect when hunting black scoter?
Black scoter hunts take place in coastal estuaries and nearshore Atlantic waters. These boat-based outings position you on open water, often among channel ledges or shallow flats where scoter flocks feed. Hunters use layout blinds or bench setups on the vessel, so you should be prepared for a constantly moving, marine environment rather than a fixed shoreline or marsh.
How does weather affect hunting black scoter?
Weather plays a major role in black scoter hunting. Cold fronts and strong onshore winds can push birds closer to shore, improving shooting opportunities, but rough seas or heavy precipitation may force trip delays for safety. Guides track migration timing and forecast conditions to schedule hunts when winds and tides create ideal feeding areas while keeping hunters comfortable and secure on the water.
Is hunting black scoter a good fit for new hunters?
Yes. Black scoter hunts along the Atlantic Flyway are well suited for newcomers. Small, guided groups (typically three hunters per guide) allow for personalized instruction on boat handling, blind setup, decoy placement and shot etiquette. Field-dressing services are included, so first-time wingshooters can focus on learning retrieving and marksmanship in a supportive environment.

Full Day Sea Duck Hunt off Georgia Coast
Growing up in rural southwest Georgia, I spent many days on the Gulf of Mexico duck hunting and fishing. In 2019 I went to college at GSU and started fishing and hunting on the Georgia coast. I have decided that because of the better inshore limits, plentiful offshore structure, and the eastern sea duck migration, that it is a worthy cause to run trips on the Georgia coastline. Not to mention the boat access to historic downtown Savannah.
Fishing and chasing ducks is an honest trade that often times humbles the hearts men. So, I have set my sails to teach others the little hunting and fishing knowledge I have as a service for any that would ask me to take them out.
Our main concern on adventures is that we seek to enjoy God's creation fruitfully. In accordance with love, joy, peace, patience etc. Aboard our boats we labor not for fish or ducks, which surely perish. But we labor for God, who created the heavens and the earth, and looks on those who believe in Him with favor. For this we sing songs of victory, rain or shine, height or depth, ease or toil, little or plenty. We seek not that our results would bring joy, but rejoice that our labor is in the Lord. Amen:)
Can bring up to 3 hunters.
