We think these three hunts should be at the top of your list.
Full Day Sea Duck Hunt off Georgia Coast
Growing up in rural southwest Georgia, I spent many days on the Gulf of Mexico duck hunting and fishing. In 2019 I went to college at GSU and started fishing and hunting on the Georgia coast. I have decided that because of the better inshore limits, plentiful offshore structure, and the eastern sea duck migration, that it is a worthy cause to run trips on the Georgia coastline. Not to mention the boat access to historic downtown Savannah.
Fishing and chasing ducks is an honest trade that often times humbles the hearts men. So, I have set my sails to teach others the little hunting and fishing knowledge I have as a service for any that would ask me to take them out.
Our main concern on adventures is that we seek to enjoy God's creation fruitfully. In accordance with love, joy, peace, patience etc. Aboard our boats we labor not for fish or ducks, which surely perish. But we labor for God, who created the heavens and the earth, and looks on those who believe in Him with favor. For this we sing songs of victory, rain or shine, height or depth, ease or toil, little or plenty. We seek not that our results would bring joy, but rejoice that our labor is in the Lord. Amen:)

About Our Black Scoter Hunts in Georgia
Most important info about these hunts—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.
Summary & Terrain
Georgia’s coastal waters host one of the most distinctive scoter hunts in the continental U.S. as wintering black scoters arrive in force along the Atlantic shoreline. These sea ducks congregate in open water near barrier islands, tidal inlets, and submerged flats, offering hunters a front-row seat to big-water waterfowling. Decoy spreads are often set in deeper channels or on wind-protected flats, while hunts typically launch from small boats that navigate coastal marshes and nearshore waters. The ever-changing tides and coastal weather create a dynamic environment where large flocks of scoters can be encountered nearly every outing.
Black scoter hunts on the Georgia coast blend moderate physical demands with a high-energy shooting experience. Hunters ride in small, layout-style boats or skiffs, working closely with guides to position decoys and time shots as flocks approach. Sea conditions can add challenge—swells, wind, and chop require steady balance and clear communication. Most hunters, from novices to veterans, find the pace exhilarating: multiple shots per pass, fast-flying birds, and the need to quickly re-load and re-set decoys between drifts. While safety and boat handling are paramount, the guide-led format means newcomers receive hands-on instruction in watercraft operation, decoy management, and effective calling.
Black scoter hunts in Georgia are offered strictly as day hunts with no overnight lodging or sleeping facilities included. Hunters typically meet their guide at a coastal or river access point and spend the day in boats or portable waterfowl blinds in estuaries and coastal waters. All necessary gear for the hunt—boats, decoys, blinds, and basic field equipment—is provided by the outfitter, while participants arrange their own accommodations and meals offsite. Heating and cooling amenities are not applicable to these single‐day waterfowl outings.
Scoter season on Georgia’s coast generally runs from December through late winter, coinciding with peak migration and the highest tides that bring birds closer to shore. Hunts are offered as half-day or full-day trips, typically accommodating two to three hunters per boat. All necessary waterfowl permits and licenses are included, and field-dressing of birds is handled on the water. Hunters should come prepared with cold-weather foul-weather gear, waterproof boots, and upland safety equipment. Beyond the hunt itself, many anglers combine these trips with coastal lodging and local seafood dining, making for a winter waterfowl experience that’s both rewarding and memorable.
Georgia black scoter hunts are priced as single‐day outings, averaging about $525 per hunter. Since these trips don’t include lodging or meals, the cost primarily covers one‐on‐one guide service, boat or blind placement, decoys, and all field gear. The most budget‐friendly hunts typically involve larger groups in shared boats using standard gear and a set number of shooting hours. Mid‐level packages often limit group size, extend shooting windows, and include upgraded decoys or extra shells. At the top end, hunters can expect more personalized attention, private boat or blind setups in less‐pressured areas, and premium waterfowl equipment. In every case, bird retrieval and basic field processing are included, while participants arrange their own accommodations and meals offsite.
FAQs
What you need to know before you book:
What type of terrain should I expect when hunting black scoters in Georgia?
Black scoter hunts in Georgia take place along coastal waters, estuaries, tidal creeks and river mouths. You’ll spend the day in a boat or portable waterfowl blind set in shallow, brackish water near sandbars and oyster beds where scoters congregate. On-deck tideline currents and mudflats at low tide are common features of these hunts.
Are black scoter hunts in Georgia typically more physical or accessible?
These are fairly accessible hunts. Since outings are single-day and fully guided, you won’t carry heavy packs or hike deep into wilderness. Your guide provides the boat, blinds, decoys and field equipment—your role is simply to get in the blind, stay alert, and take steady shots. Basic waterfowling fitness and comfort in a boat are the primary requirements.
What time of year is best for hunting black scoters in Georgia?
The prime window runs from late fall through early winter, typically November into January, when migrating scoters stage along Georgia’s coast. Cooler water temperatures and seasonal tides drive flocks closer to shore, improving your chances. Checking local tide charts and timing your hunt around incoming tides will further increase scoter activity.
