Intro to the state—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.
Summary
Connecticut offers a unique and rewarding hunting experience, nestled amidst its picturesque landscapes of rolling hills and dense forests. Renowned for its diverse wildlife, hunters can pursue a variety of game species, including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and waterfowl, all thriving within its varied habitats. The state’s commitment to sustainable hunting practices and wildlife management ensures that these natural resources are preserved for future generations. Additionally, Connecticut's unique mix of suburban and rural areas provides ample opportunities for both novice and seasoned hunters to explore. With access to over 100 state forests and parks, along with vibrant local hunting communities, Connecticut stands as a prime destination for those seeking an exceptional hunting adventure.
Connecticut’s hunting landscapes blend gently rolling farmland, open crop and grass fields, managed brush thickets, and mixed hardwood–pine woodlots. Upland bird preserves are laid out in large blocks of low‐brush cover, idle cropfields, native prairie grasses and intermittent pines, while waterfowl hunts use cornfield and grassfield blinds adjacent to ponds, marshes, and tidal creeks. Deer and turkey hunts rely on strategically placed tree stands or ground blinds along woodland edges, hedgerows, and large tracts of agricultural fields and hay lots. Altogether, these privately managed properties create a diverse mosaic of cover and open ground optimized for a wide variety of game species.
Connecticut upland and waterfowl hunts are offered as day trips on privately managed farmland, brush thickets, open fields, wetlands, and mixed timber tracts. There are no on-site accommodations or sleeping arrangements, as all hunts operate on a day-use basis and hunters return to their own lodging each evening. Field amenities include strategically placed ground blinds, tree stands, and waterfowl blinds adjacent to ponds, marshes, and tidal creeks. Heating and cooling options are not applicable to this day-hunt format. Guided support, field setup, and in-field transportation are provided by outfitters, allowing hunters to focus entirely on their pursuit.
We think these three hunts should be at the top of your list:
European-Style Tower Shoot, Lunch Provided
While the majority of our hunts are behind pointing or flushing dogs, tower shoots, or continental shoots, are also very popular at Markover. Twelve stations, or buts, are positioned at various distances surrounding the central tower. Each station, containing 2 shooters, is arranged to keep the visibility of the tower at a bare minimum, if at all.
Birds are released from the central tower, 6-7 at a time, and fly full speed over the tree tops creating an extremely challenging shot for even the most seasoned shooter.
The shooters rotate stations after an equal number of birds have been released so that everyone has an opportunity to shoot at that day's hot stations.
Halfway through the day we break for a hearty lunch at the lodge. Following lunch we head back to the fields for the remaining afternoon portion of the shoot.
Springers, Labs and Goldens along with their handlers retrieve the downed birds as the shoot progresses.
All birds are evenly divided between the shooters at the end of the day and can be traded for cleaned birds for a small fee.
No ammo restrictions
No hunting license required (in-state and out-of-state)
Two shooters per station
Safety glasses and hearing protection is advised
Please wear outdoor clothing including all terrain boots and either a hunter orange hat or vest
Minimum age is 13 years old
A lunchtime meal is served prior to second half of shoot
All birds are evenly divided between shooters at day's end
Birds traded/cleaned for a small fee
Bring a cooler to take birds home.

Connecticut FAQs
What you need to know before you book:
What type of terrain should I expect when hunting in Connecticut?
Connecticut’s hunting grounds feature a mix of gently rolling farmland, open crop and grass fields, managed brush thickets, and mixed hardwood–pine woodlots. Upland bird preserves use low‐brush cover, idle cropfields and native prairie grasses interspersed with pines. Waterfowl blinds are set up alongside ponds, marshes and tidal creeks. Deer and turkey hunts take place along woodland edges, hedgerows and large agricultural fields, providing a varied mosaic of cover and open ground.
Are hunts in Connecticut conducted on public or private land?
All guided hunts in Connecticut are held on privately managed properties. Outfitters partner with local landowners to create large blocks of farmland, woodlots, wetlands and brush thickets optimized for upland birds, waterfowl, deer and turkey. Hunters return to their own lodging each evening, as there are no on-site accommodations.
Is hunting in Connecticut a good fit for new hunters?
Yes. Connecticut’s day-hunt format, strategic blinds and one-on-one guide support make it accessible for newcomers. The terrain is generally moderate, and guided transportation between stands or blinds means novices can focus on learning fieldcraft without worrying about navigation or heavy pack-outs.

Picturesque Upland Hunt on 300 Acre Preserve - 6 Chukar
Whether it's low, well-managed brush cover, idle cropfields or woodland habitat, we have you covered.
While it would be easy to plant vast fields of grasses and walk away, we know from 50 years of hunting experience that those types of simplistic approaches to creating cover don't work. That's why our main focus at Markover is the careful planning, executing and maintaining rich cover to create the diverse conditions of our hunting fields that generations of hunters have come to expect and enjoy.
Interspersed with patches of native praire grass and intermittent low pines, you'll find our fields to be ideal for full season bird cover.
Most of our off-season at Markover is spent maintaining and establishing our diverse cover. As the seasons pass, you'll find that our ground growth and foliage offerings change while continuing to offer quality bird holding areas that are available all year long without sacrificing huntability.
Picturesque and well-maintained, you'll find the views throughout our fields to be a spectacular addition to your hunting experience.

Semi-Guided Deer Hunt - Half Day
Deer hunts target whitetail deer during the regular firearms and archery season (‘September through December, respectively). Given the nature of deer, a side by side, one on one guided hunt is not practical. Instead, a scouting day is offered.
During the scouting day, Justin and the client(s) will go through a selected area to prepare for a hunt. Hunters will learn what to look for and interpret how deer are interacting with the environment. The goal is to build a harvest strategy depending on the observations made during the scout, the time of year and upcoming weather. Reach out for more deer hunting information!

Picturesque Upland Hunt on 300 Acre Preserve - 6 Pheasant
6 main hunting fields
300+ acres
Large group hosting - up to 15 hunters at a time (groups of up to 4)
No combined groups - you hunt with your friends/family
