About Our Roosevelt Elk Hunts

Intro to this species—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary

The Roosevelt elk (*Cervus canadensis roosevelti*), native to the lush coastal forests of the Pacific Northwest, is a distinctive subspecies characterized by its impressive size and robust build, with males reaching weights of up to 1,300 pounds. Notably, they possess large, palmate antlers, which can span up to four feet, making them a prominent and visually striking target for hunters. Their dense, dark-brown to grayish-brown coats provide excellent camouflage in their forested habitats, presenting a challenge for hunters seeking to spot and track these magnificent animals in their natural environment. Successful hunting of Roosevelt elk often requires a combination of stealth and an understanding of their behavior, as they typically inhabit rugged, densely wooded areas and are most active during early morning and late evening. As regulated hunts are common, proper licensing and adherence to local wildlife management practices are essential for hunters aiming to pursue this iconic species responsibly.

Hunt Features

Roosevelt elk hunts blend the thrill of chasing big bulls with comfortable, lodge-style or backcountry camps. Most outfitted trips include experienced guides who scout remote ridges and timbered canyons—often with the help of pack animals—to locate rutting bulls and employ calling, spot-and-stalk tactics. Accommodations range from four-bedroom ranch houses with hot tubs and home-cooked meals to lightweight spike camps carried into alpine settings, and packages generally cover all guiding, meals, field-dressing, trophy packing, and transport to trailheads. While terrain can be steep and rugged, hunters of moderate fitness will find ample opportunity to pursue trophy bulls pushing 1,000 pounds with impressive antler spreads. Many operations also observe alcohol-free policies in camp to maintain safety and tradition.

Amenities

Roosevelt Elk hunts typically operate from either comfortable lodges or more rustic tent camps. Lodge accommodations feature private rooms with beds and full modern climate control for year-round comfort, while tent camps offer a back-to-basics experience with sleeping on floor pads or ground mats under canvas. All hunts include daily meals prepared by camp staff. Heating and cooling in lodges is handled through modern systems, whereas tented setups rely on natural ventilation and basic heating arrangements to suit field conditions.

5-Day Roosevelt Elk Hunt in NW California
In need of a Northwestern California elk hunting guide? A Northwestern California bull elk tag is perhaps the most coveted Roosevelt tag in the state. Only a handful of bull and either-sex tags are up for lottery every year and the hunt unit is expansive. Low pressure, rutting bulls, and room to roam – what more could a hunter ask for? How about someone who lives and works in the hunt unit who knows the elk, has years of experience calling, and who can get the animal out for you in a timely manner? Roosevelt elk are no stranger to steep, thick, nasty country. The primary tactic for targeting big bulls in the Northwest unit is calling, action can be fast and up close. There is also some opportunity for spot and stalk. We hunt elk on public land in the Northwestern unit. The unit is so big and tags extremely scarce so some of the herds in the zone have never seen human hunting pressure because hunters often focus on private land. If you have already drawn or you are sitting on a pile of elk points and are thinking about putting in for the Northwestern elk zone give us a call. NO alcohol
