About Our Raccoon Hunts

Intro to this species—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary

The raccoon (Procyon lotor) is a highly adaptable and intelligent mammal known for its distinctive facial mask and ringed tail, making it one of the most recognizable wildlife species in North America. Weighing between 8 to 20 pounds, these nocturnal creatures possess exceptional dexterity, enabled by their uniquely flexible front paws, which resemble human hands—an adaptation that allows them to manipulate a wide range of objects and open containers. When hunting raccoons, hunters typically take advantage of their nocturnal activity patterns, using techniques such as calling and baiting to attract them, especially near water sources where they are commonly found foraging. Due to their keen sense of touch and smell, hunters should also consider utilizing stealth and patience to enhance their chances of success. Overall, raccoons represent a challenging yet rewarding pursuit for hunters due to their intelligence and elusive nature, making them a notable inclusion in any hunting directory.

Hunt Features

Raccoon hunts typically take place after dark on private ranches, timbered farms, or swamp edges, offering a classic nocturnal outing for families and novices alike. Guided excursions often employ spotlights or thermal optics from ATVs or elevated stands, and some regions use trained coonhounds or electronic calls to locate and tree raccoons. Terrain varies from creek-lined hollows and mixed woodlands to pasture-scattered clearings, with land reserved for single groups for an uncrowded experience. Most packages include an experienced guide, necessary permits, safety briefings, transportation in the field, field dressing of harvested animals, and comfortable lodging or primitive camping options. Hunts run through the evening until bag limits are reached, delivering a hands-on, memorable fair-chase experience under the stars.

Amenities

Raccoon hunts in this region most often include lodging in private homes or small lodges, where hunters can expect comfortable beds and year-round climate control. Accommodations are typically arranged by the outfitter, though some packages leave housing up to the hunter to secure. Heating and cooling are provided via modern HVAC systems in nearly all outfitter-supplied quarters. A few operations may not specify or include accommodations, so it’s wise to confirm whether you’ll need to bring your own shelter or arrange nearby lodging before your trip.
