About Our Raccoon Hunts in Arkansas

Most important info about these hunts—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary & Terrain

Arkansas’s Ozark region offers some of the most authentic fair-chase raccoon hunting in the South. Hunts take place on privately held mixed farmland and timberland that combines rolling pastures, hardwood ridges, creek bottoms, ponds, and wooded hollers. With no high fences and no penned animals, hunters pursue truly wild coons in their natural habitat. Lodging is typically provided on-site in rustic farmhouses or nearby campgrounds, with small groups given exclusive access to each property for a private, camp-style experience.

Difficulty & Strategy

Raccoon hunting in Arkansas is a moderately demanding sport that relies on well-trained coon dogs and skilled guides. Evening hunts begin shortly after dark and often stretch into the late evening, following dogs as they quarter creek banks, climb ridge sides, and tree coons in steep hollers. Hunters should be prepared for periods of walking over varied terrain and may need to switch between vehicles and on-foot approaches when dogs take game off road. The emphasis is on teamwork—handlers, dogs, and hunters coordinate calls and hand signals to locate and stalk treed coons for a clean shot.

Season & Additional Info

The primary raccoon season in Arkansas runs from mid-October through late February, with peak activity often occurring on crisp fall and early-winter nights under partial or full moonlight. Night-hunting permits and raccoon tags are required and are usually arranged by the outfitter. Field dressing is included, and harvested pelts can be taken home or left for processing. Non-hunters are often welcome at no extra lodging charge, making coon hunts a popular multi-day outing for families, friends, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a true Ozark adventure.

Pricing

Guided raccoon hunts in Arkansas typically average around $230 per hunter, making them an accessible option for both newcomers and experienced trackers. Entry-level packages (around $150) usually cover a single evening hunt with a shared guide and basic lodging support. Mid-range hunts (approximately $200–$300) include private‐bedroom lodging in a fully equipped house near prime creek bottoms and wooded areas, one-on-one guidance with experienced coon hunters and their hounds, and spotlighting gear. Premium options (up to about $350) add extra nights, on-site meals, and dedicated guides for a fully personalized experience. All packages provide professional field care of pelts—skinning, salting, and prepping for tanning—so hunters can focus on the hunt and return home with clean, ready-to-process fur.
