Intro to the state—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.
Summary
Kansas offers a unique and rewarding hunting experience, renowned for its diverse landscapes and abundant wildlife. The state is particularly celebrated for its vast expanses of prairies, rolling hills, and fertile farmland, making it an ideal habitat for an array of game species. Hunters flock to Kansas for its world-class upland bird hunting, particularly pheasant and quail, while also finding ample opportunities for deer, turkey, and waterfowl hunting. With an impressive mix of wild game and a commitment to conservation, Kansas is a premier destination for both seasoned and novice hunters seeking to immerse themselves in the rich outdoor heritage of the Midwest.
Much of Kansas hunting country features a patchwork of fertile agricultural land and native prairie, where sweeping fields of crops like corn, soybeans, milo, wheat, and sunflowers blend with expanses of native grass CRP, sandhill pastures and dense brush or plum thickets. Riparian creek bottoms, hedgerows, timbered draws and scattered ponds or stock tanks create natural corridors and watering holes that concentrate game—from whitetail deer moving through creek draws to doves gathering at isolated water sources. Prescribed burns, strip disking and inter-seeded food plots maintain vibrant edge habitat, supporting pheasants, quail, turkeys and other upland species year-round.
Kansas hunts are based at comfortable, centrally located lodges, each offering private or semi‐private rooms equipped with standard beds. All accommodations feature modern climate control systems, ensuring both heating and cooling for year‐round comfort. These lodge‐style camps serve as convenient bases for guided outings into surrounding crop fields, native grasslands, and timbered draws, providing a consistent home base after each day’s hunt.
We think these three hunts should be at the top of your list:

Quality Dove Hunt - All Inclusive - Priced Per Day
This property delivers exciting dove hunting opportunities. With the season kicking off on September 1st each year, hunters benefit from both local birds and migratory doves arriving from northern states when conditions push them south. Most hunts are set up around small ponds surrounded by bare ground—prime spots where doves regularly come in to drink during the early morning and late evening hours. Because the area is made up of sandy soil, natural water sources are limited, which funnels birds into just a few key locations and creates fast-paced action. The daily bag limit of 15 doves ensures there's plenty of opportunity to stay busy in the field.
The day starts before sunrise with a hearty, home-cooked breakfast. After that, hunters head out to the pond setups. Motion decoys are used to draw birds in from surrounding fields of corn, wheat, soybeans, sunflowers, and milo. Well-trained Labrador retrievers assist with recovering downed birds. Once the morning flight tapers off around 10:30, it’s back to the lodge for a relaxing midday break and a freshly prepared lunch. The group then returns to the field around 3:30 p.m. for an afternoon hunt, when doves once again begin moving toward water. Capable of flying at speeds up to 55 mph, doves are agile and unpredictable in the air, offering a fun challenge even for experienced wingshooters. After the evening hunt wraps up, guests gather for a quality dinner and swap stories about the day’s highlights.

Kansas FAQs
What you need to know before you book:
What type of terrain should I expect when hunting in Kansas?
Kansas hunting country is characterized by a mix of fertile cropland and native prairie. You’ll move between large fields of corn, soybeans, milo, wheat or sunflowers and adjoining CRP grasslands, sandhill pastures, dense brush and plum thickets. Natural funnels form in riparian creek bottoms, timbered draws, hedgerows and around stock tanks, creating ideal spots for deer, turkey and upland birds.
Are there specific regions of Kansas known for better hunting?
Yes. The Flint Hills region in eastern Kansas is legendary for whitetail and turkey hunts along its tallgrass prairie and creek bottoms. North‐central counties such as Dickinson, Saline and McPherson offer strong pheasant and quail numbers on CRP fields and food plots. The western shortgrass plains around Ellis and Russell counties are also productive for upland species, particularly after timely prescribed burns and strip disking.
Is hunting in Kansas a good fit for new hunters?
Absolutely. Kansas outfitters cater to beginners with guided, lodge‐based hunts that include walk‐up instruction and strategic field setups. Terrain is generally open and forgiving, and game concentrations around food plots and water sources boost success rates. Comfortable accommodations and climate‐controlled lodges also make Kansas hunts accessible and enjoyable for those new to the sport.

4 Day / 4 Night Rio Grande Turkey Hunt - All Inclusive
Exceptional Rio Grande turkey hunts are available, with a range of unique opportunities across 12,000 acres of diverse habitat. The thrill of observing a mature tom approach a hunting blind, tail feathers fanned and gobbling in the crisp spring air, is an experience like no other. Hunters will need to use their skills and techniques to coax their target into the open, with the primary method being the imitation of a hen’s call to attract the toms. Mastery of the various calls, which total 28 distinct sounds such as clucks, yelps, gobbles, purrs, rattles, and cackles, is essential. Familiarity with the Rio Grande’s behaviors and calls, as with other subspecies, will greatly improve the chances of success.

Wild Pheasant Hunt - All Inclusive - Priced Per Day
With a daily limit of 4 roosters per hunter, this property offers the highest pheasant harvest limits in the nation, giving you 33% more opportunities than what’s available in states like South Dakota. We are proud to offer some of the finest wild pheasant hunting in the world, thanks to our 12,000 acres of carefully managed land. This includes 6,000 acres of native grass CRP spread across 50 different fields, creating the ideal environment for pheasants to thrive—from nesting and brood rearing to winter survival.
The foundation of pheasant habitat is well-maintained native grasses, which we take great care to manage. To ensure these grasslands remain optimal, we use controlled burns to prevent overgrowth and rank grass. We also use strip disking to create open spaces for broods to forage and develop, inter-seed to enhance legume and forb growth (which can increase insect numbers by up to 300%), and plant food plots to offer birds reliable nourishment during the fall and winter months.
