About Our Ring-Necked-Pheasant Hunts in Connecticut

Most important info about these hunts—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary & Terrain

Connecticut’s private preserves offer some of the best ring-necked pheasant hunting in the Northeast, with managed cover that mimics native grasslands, crop fields, and mixed woodlands. Hunts are conducted on spacious fields—often 300 acres or more—where low pines, prairie grasses, and transitional brush create ideal holding areas for game birds year-round. All outings are guided and use well-trained pointing or flushing dogs to locate and present pheasants in challenging yet fair-chase environments. Small groups (typically two to four hunters) ensure personalized attention, and lone hunters can often be accommodated during weekday openings or by request.

Difficulty & Strategy

These hunts cater to both novices and seasoned wing-shooters. Most outings follow classic field-hunt protocols, with hunters riding or walking along designated lanes while dogs quarter ahead to find coveys. For an extra challenge, some preserves offer tower or continental shoots featuring multiple release stations that send birds streaming across the sky from varying angles. Shot distances can range from point-blank flushes to 40–50 yards, making these hunts an excellent way to refine marksmanship and learn efficient gun-and-dog teamwork. Guides advise on station rotation, safe shooting angles, and proper firearm etiquette to maximize your success in the field.

Amenities

Ring-necked pheasant hunts in Connecticut are organized as guided day hunts on private farmlands and preserve properties. There is no on-site housing, and because these are strictly daytime outings, no sleeping quarters or dedicated heating and cooling systems are provided. Hunters meet guides each morning at a central access point and proceed to managed fields for flush-and-shoot wingshooting with trained bird dogs. Lodging and any climate-controlled accommodations are arranged off-site, allowing participants to return to local inns or personal accommodations each evening. These day-trip hunts suit both newcomers and seasoned shooters seeking well-structured pheasant hunting experiences.

Season & Additional Info

Pheasant season in Connecticut typically runs from autumn into midwinter, aligning with cooler weather and robust bird flights. All hunts include guide service, dog handling, field dressing, and on-site bird cleaning or processing options. Hunters do not need a state upland game license on private land, but should plan for applicable sales tax and customary guide gratuities (around 15–20%). A liability waiver and basic safety briefing are required before each hunt, and participants are advised to bring shotguns (12 or 20 gauge), shell caddies, hearing protection, and appropriate outdoor clothing. At day’s end, the harvested birds can be divided evenly among shooters or traded for professionally cleaned birds for home preparation.

Pricing

Ring-necked pheasant hunts in Connecticut run on average around $950 per day. Rates typically cover a guided flush-and-shoot outing on private farmland with trained bird dogs, field fees, guide services and dog handling included. Costs can vary based on group size (private vs. small‐group hunts), number of birds or shells provided, and added services such as catered lunches or on-farm hospitality. Because these are daytime trips only, lodging and transport to and from local inns or homes is arranged separately, giving hunters flexibility to choose accommodations that fit their budget and preferences.

Picturesque Upland Hunt on 300 Acre Preserve - 6 Pheasant
Whether it's low, well-managed brush cover, idle cropfields or woodland habitat, we have you covered. While it would be easy to plant vast fields of grasses and walk away, we know from 50 years of hunting experience that those types of simplistic approaches to creating cover don't work. That's why our main focus at Markover is the careful planning, executing and maintaining rich cover to create the diverse conditions of our hunting fields that generations of hunters have come to expect and enjoy. Interspersed with patches of native praire grass and intermittent low pines, you'll find our fields to be ideal for full season bird cover. Most of our off-season at Markover is spent maintaining and establishing our diverse cover. As the seasons pass, you'll find that our ground growth and foliage offerings change while continuing to offer quality bird holding areas that are available all year long without sacrificing huntability. Picturesque and well-maintained, you'll find the views throughout our fields to be a spectacular addition to your hunting experience. 6 main hunting fields 300+ acres Large group hosting - up to 15 hunters at a time (groups of up to 4) No combined groups - you hunt with your friends/family Lone hunters are welcome weekdays & as openings allow on weekends

European-Style Tower Shoot, Lunch Provided
While the majority of our hunts are behind pointing or flushing dogs, tower shoots, or continental shoots, are also very popular at Markover. Twelve stations, or buts, are positioned at various distances surrounding the central tower. Each station, containing 2 shooters, is arranged to keep the visibility of the tower at a bare minimum, if at all. Birds are released from the central tower, 6-7 at a time, and fly full speed over the tree tops creating an extremely challenging shot for even the most seasoned shooter. The shooters rotate stations after an equal number of birds have been released so that everyone has an opportunity to shoot at that day's hot stations. Halfway through the day we break for a hearty lunch at the lodge. Following lunch we head back to the fields for the remaining afternoon portion of the shoot. Springers, Labs and Goldens along with their handlers retrieve the downed birds as the shoot progresses. All birds are evenly divided between the shooters at the end of the day and can be traded for cleaned birds for a small fee. No ammo restrictions No hunting license required (in-state and out-of-state) Two shooters per station Safety glasses and hearing protection is advised Please wear outdoor clothing including all terrain boots and either a hunter orange hat or vest Minimum age is 13 years old A lunchtime meal is served prior to second half of shoot All birds are evenly divided between shooters at day's end Birds traded/cleaned for a small fee Bring a cooler to take birds home.
