About Our Mule Deer Hunts in Montana

Most important info about these hunts—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary & Terrain

Montana’s mule deer country encompasses a diverse mix of private ranchlands, wide open badlands, river breaks, and high-elevation mountain draws. From the sage-brush coulees and eroded canyons of eastern Montana to the timbered ridges and subalpine parks of the western ranges, mule deer thrive in habitats that blend open feeding areas with cover for bedding. Many outfitters hold access to large blocks of private ground interspersed with adjacent public lands, giving hunters the ability to glass expansive vistas from 4x4 vantage points or to hike deep into seldom-pressured canyons and drainages. Whether you’re sitting in an elk-style tent camp on the plains or riding horseback into remote backcountry spike camps, the state’s varied terrain offers something for every style of mule deer hunt.

Difficulty & Strategy

Hunt difficulty in Montana can range from moderate glass-and-stalk outings to physically demanding horseback or foot missions in steep country. Lower-impact hunts on private ranches are often conducted by vehicle, with comfortable camps and daily glassing for mature bucks. By contrast, wilderness hunts in areas like the Bob Marshall Wilderness require pack trips, spike camps, and sustained hiking at elevation. Most mule deer hunts rely on spot-and-stalk techniques, using binoculars and spotting scopes to locate bucks on ridgelines or in open meadows, then making a careful approach through sage, brush, or timber. Guides tailor strategies to the terrain—whether it’s dropping into a canyon for a close-range stalk or glassing creek bottoms from a high bench and then hiking in.

Amenities

Mule deer hunts in Montana are typically run from rustic backcountry camps that rely on wall tents as the primary lodging, with the occasional use of basic cabins for larger groups or support staff. Sleeping arrangements are simple and functional, featuring cots in most tent units and a standard bed in cabin settings. Heating is provided by wood-burning stoves in the tents and propane heaters in cabins or more enclosed shelters, ensuring a comfortable night’s rest even when temperatures drop. Camps are designed to balance comfort with the rugged needs of guided, one-on-one hunts, offering a warm and secure base between scouting and stalks.

Season & Additional Info

Mule deer seasons in Montana generally run through the autumn months, with peak activity coinciding with the late-season rut in October and November. Hunts typically last four to seven days, and most packages include an experienced guide, all meals, lodging in tents or cabins, and field dressing of your animal. Licenses and deer tags are drawn or purchased over-the-counter depending on the hunt area, and application deadlines often fall in mid-March. Post-hunt services vary by outfitter but commonly include transportation of meat to a processor, taxidermy drop-off, and help with packing out trophy skulls and hides. Many hunters also opt for multi-species combo hunts—adding whitetail, elk, or waterfowl—to maximize their time in the field.

Pricing

Prices for Montana Mule Deer hunts listed on our site average around $7,200. Most packages include a multi-day, one-on-one guided experience out of a rustic backcountry camp, with lodging in wall tents or basic cabins, meals, and field care for your trophy. Lower-end hunts generally feature shorter durations and shared tent accommodations. Mid-level options extend the number of hunt days and may offer private tent or small cabin upgrades. Top-tier packages often provide exclusive access to high-density deer areas, longer seasons, and enhanced guide-to-hunter ratios. In all cases, essential field services—initial dressing, caping, and skinning—are included, with additional meat processing or trophy shipping available upon request.

Montana Combo Elk + Mule Deer Hunt Using 4x4 Trucks, 5.5 Days, 70K Private Acres
This is a unique hunt on private land where hunts are conducted out of 4x4 trucks, making it feasible for elderly folks or those with difficulty walking. We have been operating out of our Candy Dan Camp for over 25 years. Constructed on the private ranch we hunt, located some 65 miles south of Great Falls, our base camp consists of a newly constructed cook house built in 2013, equipped with a full kitchen, buffet table, couches, hot and cold water, and a custom dining table for up to 12 hunters, three cabins for sleeping quarters for the hunters, a sauna house, and sleeping quarters for the guides. Camp is equipped with propane heat, electricity in all cabins, a full shower/sauna, and WIFI! DL Elk Outfitters conducts guided rifle elk hunts on over 70,000 private acres in the Big Belt Mountains in central Montana. These private lands are home to some of Montana’s largest resident elk herds. We are not dependent on migrations or heavy snows to push the elk out of areas we cannot hunt, giving our hunters a high chance of success. The country is rich in large grass meadows for feed to ridges and draws of timber, making excellent habitat. Elk hunters access the hunting areas by 4-wheel drive vehicles and hiking to vantage spots and glassing for bull elk. (No horses or pack strings here.) Only bull elk with brow tines are legal in our area to harvest, and that means 5, 6, and 7 point bulls are the norm here rather than the exception. Elk hunters average glassing more than 100 elk per week on our hunts. Mule Deer and Whitetail Deer are available on all elk hunts and make for a great combo. Our hunting leases, comfortable cabins, elevations under 6500 feet, and 4-wheel drive access make this an area any hunter, regardless of age or physical condition, can hunt. Our rifle elk hunts are all guided, 2 hunters per guide unless prior arrangements are made. Elk and deer licenses are on a draw basis and have to be applied for to the state of Montana by March 15. Draw rates in recent years have been 100%.

5-Day Combo Mule Deer & Elk Hunt on Horseback
These are among the most rugged Montana elk hunts, and we often describe them as “extreme” hunts. Our hunts are guided in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Swan Valley areas of Montana off of horseback. Our guides and horses have been preparing and getting shape all summer long on backcountry pack trips; elk season is what they’ve been waiting for! We offer combination hunts in which you can target mule deer, whitetail, and bear as well. Some of our hunters have snagged a wolf tag too! Many of our elk hunters bring both their rifle and bow. Multi-weapon hunts are popular with elk hunters that like to maximize their opportunity. We like to get deep into the back country and utilize spike camps. This can get us in closer proximity to the elk for opening day. This spike camp strategy has produced many harvested elk in seasons past, but does lack the comforts of traditional hunting camps. Our elk herds are in better shape today than they have been in thirty years! Our hunting areas also support ample populations of whitetail and mule deer and color phase black bear, increasing the chances of success across species. This terrain is more challenging to hunt elk in, no doubt, no flat land here. We utilize our horses to search the front range of the Bob Marshall for elk. With exclusive access in the areas where we hunt, Swan Mountain Outfitters is able to offer archery elk hunters perhaps one of the most unique and best opportunities to bag an elk of a lifetime with a bow. As the season progresses, migration of elk begins and affords our late season elk hunters an opportunity to bag an elk at lower altitudes.
