About Our Prairie Dog Hunts in Colorado

Most important info about these hunts—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary & Terrain

Eastern Colorado’s shortgrass prairie and agricultural lands offer some of the most accessible and action-packed varmint hunting in the country. On private ranchlands, sprawling prairie dog towns create a checkerboard of burrow systems and level shooting benches—even sunflower fields and irrigated pastures can support dense colonies. Hunts typically operate out of a comfortable deer camp, but in the field you’ll move among open flats and gently rolling terrain where visibility often extends for hundreds of yards.

Difficulty & Strategy

Prairie dog hunts in Colorado are rated moderate in difficulty—few physical demands but solid marksmanship is required. Most hunters employ scoped rifles from prone or bench-rest positions, picking off targets at 100 to 300 yards. Wind reading and rapid target transition are key skills, making these hunts ideal for honing follow-up shots. Guides help locate active towns and set up strategic shooting stations, ensuring steady action throughout the day. Whether you’re a beginner seeking to refine fundamentals or an experienced shooter chasing precision, prairie dog hunts offer non-stop opportunities to test your rifle skills.

Amenities

Prairie dog hunts in Colorado are typically based from comfortable lodges or ranch-style accommodations, with occasional rustic camp options for those seeking a back-to-basics experience. Guests sleep on standard beds in private or semi-private rooms, ensuring a good night’s rest before morning shoots. Most facilities feature modern climate control systems to maintain a pleasant indoor environment year-round, and common areas often include heated living spaces, kitchens, and gear storage. Meal service and guide support are woven into the daily schedule, so hunters can focus on the field while enjoying reliable lodging, comfortable sleeping arrangements, and temperature-regulated cabins or lodges.

Season & Additional Info

Colorado allows year-round prairie dog hunting on private lands with no bag limits—only a valid small game license is needed. Typical packages run three to four days and include lodging at a ranch camp with beds, showers, and meals. Many outfitters also bundle pigeon or mourning dove hunts to round out your small-game experience. These hunts appeal to newcomers looking for a first rifle adventure as well as seasoned hunters sharpening their fieldcraft in a relaxed, all-inclusive setting.
