About Our Rocky Mountain Elk Hunts in Montana

Most important info about these hunts—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary & Terrain

Montana’s Rocky Mountain elk hunts span a broad spectrum of terrain and access styles, from remote high-elevation backcountry to accessible private-ranch country. In the true wilderness you’ll navigate steep timbered ridges, alpine meadows, and glacial drainages—often riding horseback into spike camps to position yourself ahead of opening day. Lodge-style hunts and private-land leases offer lower-elevation grass meadows, draws, and timbered coulees reachable by four-wheel vehicles. Across these diverse settings, you’ll find healthy elk herds alongside mule deer, whitetail, and even black bear in many areas, making multi-species hunts a popular option.

Difficulty & Strategy

Hunt difficulty ranges from “extreme” backcountry expeditions—where physical fitness and horsemanship are essential—to more moderate vehicle-supported outings suitable for a wider age and ability range. In rugged country, the primary tactics involve glassing from high vantage points, following bugling bulls, and executing careful spot-and-stalk approaches. Archery hunters focus on the September rut, using calling and stalking to close the distance, while rifle hunters may employ both calling and glass-and-shoot methods. On private leases, vehicle access and established vantage spots reduce the physical demands, yet still provide plentiful opportunity to locate and pattern bull elk.

Amenities

Rocky Mountain elk hunts in Montana typically combine backcountry tent camps with comfortable lodge, cabin, or house accommodations, offering options to suit a variety of preferences and budgets. Remote tent camps are often heated by wood-burning stoves, while cabins may feature propane heaters for steady warmth. Lodge and house stays generally include modern climate control for heating and cooling ease. Sleeping arrangements range from sturdy cots in camp to full beds in cabins, lodges, or houses. All hunts are guided, with camps strategically located near prime elk feeding and staging areas. After the harvest, field-dressing support is provided, and trophy care follows professional protocols for caping and transport.

Season & Additional Info

Elk seasons in Montana generally begin with the early bugle season in mid-September and transition into the general rifle season through late October or even Thanksgiving. Hunts typically run five to seven days, though multi-week combos and additional harvest days can be arranged. Licenses are drawn through the state application system (often requiring a March 15 deadline), with high success rates on many guided tags. Camps range from minimalistic spike setups to comfortable lodges or cabins with home-style meals, electricity, and hot showers—allowing each hunter to choose the right balance of adventure and comfort.

Pricing

Rocky Mountain elk hunts in Montana typically start around $8,800 for a standard, multi‐day guided package. Costs are driven primarily by hunt duration, lodging style, guide ratio and season. Entry-level trips often feature shared guides, backcountry tent camps with wood-stove heat and basic meals. Mid-tier packages upgrade to private or small-group hunts, offering heated cabins or lodge rooms, enhanced meal service and more extensive scouting. At the premium end, one-on-one guiding, high-end lodge accommodations, longer hunt windows and exclusive access to trophy herds can push rates higher. Nearly all outfitters include field-dressing support, professional caping and skull/cape transport to Montana taxidermists. Meat pack-out for local processing or donation is also arranged, ensuring a turnkey experience for both veteran and first-time elk hunters.

Montana Elk Hunt Adjacent to Yellowstone - Lodge
Our lodge hunts start the last week of October and run until the Sunday after Thanksgiving. This is the general season for Montana elk hunting. These hunts are less strenuous than the backcountry. The lodge is situated right above Deckard Flats, which is the main migratory route for the northern Yellowstone elk herd. We are surrounded by National Forest and just a 1/2 mile from the Yellowstone boundary. We hunt migrating elk as well as a healthy native herd. These guided hunts are 5 days in length. We take about 130 hunters a year. Our clients come back year after year and tell their friends about us. All of my hunters from my first few years in business are still hunting with us. We have taken several corporate clients, who use the elk hunt as an opportunity to reward employees or forge bonds with clients. This is the ideal for enjoying yourself and improving your business relationships! If you have the time, please take a look at the quality elk that our clients take from their expeditions with Hell’s A-Roarin’ Outfitters!

7-Day Combo Mule Deer & Elk Hunt on Horseback
These are among the most rugged Montana elk hunts, and we often describe them as “extreme” hunts. Our hunts are guided in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Swan Valley areas of Montana off of horseback. Our guides and horses have been preparing and getting shape all summer long on backcountry pack trips; elk season is what they’ve been waiting for! We offer combination hunts in which you can target mule deer, whitetail, and bear as well. Some of our hunters have snagged a wolf tag too! Many of our elk hunters bring both their rifle and bow. Multi weapon hunts are popular with elk hunters that like to maximize their opportunity. We like to get deep into the back country and utilize spike camps. This can get us in closer proximity to the elk for opening day. This spike camp strategy has produced many harvested elk in seasons past, but does lack the comforts of traditional hunting camps. Our elk herds are in better shape today than they have been in thirty years! Our hunting areas also support ample populations of whitetail and mule deer and color phase black bear, increasing the chances of success across species. This terrain is more challenging to hunt elk in, no doubt, no flat land here. We utilize our horses to search the front range of the Bob Marshall for elk. With exclusive access in the areas where we hunt, Swan Mountain Outfitters is able to offer archery elk hunters perhaps one of the most unique and best opportunities to bag an elk of a lifetime with a bow. As the season progresses, migration of elk begins and affords our late season elk hunters an opportunity to bag an elk at lower altitudes.

Montana Combo Elk + Antelope Hunt Using 4x4 Trucks, 5.5 Days, 70K Private Acres
This is a unique hunt on private land where hunts are conducted out of 4x4 trucks, making it feasible for elderly folks or those with difficulty walking. We have been operating out of our Candy Dan Camp for over 25 years. Constructed on the private ranch we hunt, located some 65 miles south of Great Falls, our base camp consists of a newly constructed cook house built in 2013, equipped with a full kitchen, buffet table, couches, hot and cold water, and a custom dining table for up to 12 hunters, three cabins for sleeping quarters for the hunters, a sauna house, and sleeping quarters for the guides. Camp is equipped with propane heat, electricity in all cabins, full shower/sauna, and WIFI! DL Elk Outfitters conducts guided rifle elk hunts on over 70,000 private acres in the Big Belt Mountains in central Montana. These private lands are home to some of Montana’s largest resident elk herds. We are not dependent on migrations or heavy snows to push the elk out of areas we cannot hunt, giving our hunters a high chance of success. The country is rich in large grass meadows for feed to ridges and draws of timber, making excellent habitat. Elk hunters access the hunting areas by 4-wheel drive vehicles and hiking to vantage spots and glassing for bull elk. (No horses or pack strings here.) Only bull elk with brow tines are legal in our area to harvest and that means 5, 6, and 7 point bulls are the norm here rather than the exception. Elk hunters average glassing more than 100 elk per week on our hunts. Mule Deer and Whitetail Deer are available on all elk hunts and make for a great combo. Our hunting leases, comfortable cabins, elevations under 6500 feet, and 4-wheel drive access make this an area any hunter regardless of age or physical condition can hunt. Our rifle elk hunts are all guided 2 hunters per guide unless prior arrangements are made. Elk and deer licenses are on a draw basis and have to be applied for to the state of Montana by March 15. Draw rates in recent years have been 100%.

7-Day Archery Elk Hunt
These are among the most rugged Montana elk hunts, and we often describe them as “extreme” hunts. Our hunts are guided in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Swan Valley areas of Montana off of horseback. Our guides and horses have been preparing and getting shape all summer long on backcountry pack trips; elk season is what they’ve been waiting for! Archery hunting elk, requiring close proximity to the animal, is, by its very nature, quite different from hunting these animals using a rifle. Successful archery hunts require excellent calling abilities and guides who know the difference between techniques utilized for archery versus rifle hunts. Archery hunts necessitate minimizing overexposure of hunting areas and minimizing scent control and noise. For these reasons, we only take two hunters to each of our “archery only” designated areas. We have experimented with various styles of guided archery elk hunts and we believe we have landed upon an offering that delivers the ultimate archery elk hunting experience in Montana. Even though the season is actually longer, we focus solely on the time frame surrounding the rut to maximize our opportunity: we offer three sessions of 7-day archery only hunts. Note that this boils down to 5 days of solid hunting as the rest of the time is spent getting to and from the area. We employ two-on-one guiding as we have found it is the best way to maximize our hunters' opportunities to be successful. With limited space, our archery elk hunts are the first to book up. We typically have been booked two years in advance, so don’t wait! Elk Hunting At Its Finest
We invite you to hunt with us on our well managed elk ranch that totals around 10,000 acres. Our properties are nestled into the foothills of the crazy mountains which are located in central Montana. Our goal is to limit the number of hunters we take which decreases pressure and increases success. Hunt tactics include a mixture of ground blinds, calling, and spot and stalk hunting. While it is possible to access the property by vehicle, we try to minimize disturbance by utilizing horses and hiking when possible. Trophy potential varies depending on a number of factors including time of year, temperature, weather patterns etc. but most hunters have a chance at 5x5 and 6x6 bulls. We would classify this ranch as having moderate terrain as far as elk country is concerned. This means that you don’t have to climb thousands of feet every day to reach the elk. However, it is still elk country and the ranch is over 6000’ in elevation. It is for this reason that we ask all hunters to make sure they show up in good physical condition. You will have more fun and your odds of success only increase by being in good shape. Hunt includes food, lodging and travel to and from the hunt area. Guests stay in a renovated, fully furnished four bedroom house in the town of White Sulphur Springs. We will provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In addition to cooking at the house there are great local eating options as well.

Archers can expect to see and be up close to bull elk on a daily basis. Most of our archery hunts are conducted by locating elk then stalking and calling bulls to within bow range. Archery elk hunters are treated to delicious home cooked meals, comfortable cabins, a sauna house, electricity and WIFI! Backcountry 7-Day Montana Elk Hunts Adjacent to Yellowstone
We have a remote backcountry camp in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in Montana, adjacent to the northern boundary of Yellowstone National Park. Our backcountry elk hunts start during the bugle season, September 15 and run through to October 15. This is an early rifle season and the hunts are 7 days long. The horseback ride to camp from my lodge is 22 miles. Our camp is very comfortable, with wall tents, stoves, cots, foam pads and lanterns. We always have an excellent and congenial cook in camp, with plentiful, home style meals. Our string of horses and mules are the best in the business and gentle for anyone to ride. I personally guide, and my crew of hunting guides is the best to be found. We all work as a team, and do not feel satisfied until every hunter in camp fills out. Your success of hunting and killing an elk is our main goal!
