About Our Scaled Quail Hunts in Texas

Most important info about these hunts—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary & Terrain

Scaled quail hunting in Texas delivers an authentic Southwest experience across rolling grasslands interspersed with mesquite, shinnery oak, and mixed brush. These medium-sized quail favor edge habitat—fields bordering thickets and gentle slopes—where small coveys of 6–12 birds feed on seeds and insects. Many ranches in West and South Texas have been improved with tracks and managed cover specifically to concentrate quail, offering inviting scenery and easy access to prime habitat. Comfortable lodges and well-appointed facilities are usually situated within walking distance of bird coverts, so hunters can maximize time in the field without long travel days.

Difficulty & Strategy

Scaled quail hunts are generally rated moderate in difficulty. Hunts typically follow a two-hunt-per-day schedule: a cool morning walk-up as birds feed at first light, then an afternoon outing after lunch. Guides use experienced pointing and flushing dogs to locate coveys, while stand-up drives or still-hunting over baited fields may also be offered. Shooting distances are often short to moderate (20–40 yards), but the fast, flushy nature of scaled quail requires quick handling skills and judicious shot selection. These hunts are well suited to both newcomers—who appreciate high flush rates—and seasoned wingshooters seeking challenging bird behavior.

Season & Additional Info

Texas scaled quail season generally runs from mid-October through mid-February, with daily bag limits set by state regulations (typically 15 birds per hunter). Most outfitters include lodging, all meals, field guide services, dogs, and field dressing in their packages. Hunters should bring appropriate upland shotgun gear, blaze orange, and comfortable boots. After the hunt, ranches often offer lounge areas and communal meals where guests can share stories. Many properties also support dove, mourning dove, and chachalaca hunting for those looking to extend their wingshooting adventure.

Pricing

Scaled quail hunts in Texas typically run in the $2,500–3,000 range per hunter, with an average package around $2,800. Costs depend primarily on trip length, lodging choice and guide ratio. Entry-level hunts generally include shared rooms in a climate-controlled lodge, group guiding and use of pointing dogs. Mid-tier packages often feature private rooms, smaller guide-to-hunter ratios and extended field days. Top-tier offerings may add extras such as luxury lodge amenities, dedicated guides and specialized dog teams. Most rates bundle accommodations, meals, field guiding and bird cleaning, with final pricing influenced by the number of hunting days and group size.
