About Our Bluebill (Lesser Scoup) Hunts

Intro to this species—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary

The lesser scaup, commonly called “bluebill” for the male’s bluish bill, is a popular diving duck across North America. Bluebills gather in large rafts on big lakes and rivers, diving for aquatic invertebrates and vegetation. Hunters target them over open water using diver decoy spreads or by pass shooting flight lines. Their rapid wingbeats and tight flock formations make for thrilling decoying action.

Hunt Features

Lesser Scaup (“Bluebill”) hunting generally runs from late fall through mid‐winter, with peak windows varying by region as birds follow the Atlantic and Gulf Flyways. Hunts are typically small‐group (often no more than three hunters) guided outings that use boats or shallow‐draft skiffs to access coastal bays, marsh impoundments, and open flats. Hunters employ diver‐duck decoy spreads and spot‐and‐wait tactics to entice flocks of scaup and other sea ducks within shooting range. Most packages include an experienced guide, necessary permits, safety briefings, and on-site field dressing of birds. Whether you’re new to waterfowling or a seasoned diver-duck enthusiast, these tailored hunts offer high‐action shooting, expert support, and the chance to capitalize on regional migration patterns for consistently good success.

Amenities

Bluebill (Lesser Scaup) hunts are offered exclusively as guided day trips, with no overnight lodging or sleeping arrangements included. Meals are not provided, so hunters should plan for their own food and accommodations offsite. These outings typically depart from lakeside or wetland access points, placing participants directly into prime waterfowl habitat for morning and afternoon sessions. There are no dedicated heating or cooling systems during the hunt itself, so hunters are encouraged to dress in layered, weather-resistant clothing and bring any personal thermal or rain gear needed for comfort. All equipment beyond firearms and ammunition should be arranged by the hunter in advance.

Full Day Sea Duck Hunt off Georgia Coast
Growing up in rural southwest Georgia, I spent many days on the Gulf of Mexico duck hunting and fishing. In 2019 I went to college at GSU and started fishing and hunting on the Georgia coast. I have decided that because of the better inshore limits, plentiful offshore structure, and the eastern sea duck migration, that it is a worthy cause to run trips on the Georgia coastline. Not to mention the boat access to historic downtown Savannah. Fishing and chasing ducks is an honest trade that often times humbles the hearts men. So, I have set my sails to teach others the little hunting and fishing knowledge I have as a service for any that would ask me to take them out. Our main concern on adventures is that we seek to enjoy God's creation fruitfully. In accordance with love, joy, peace, patience etc. Aboard our boats we labor not for fish or ducks, which surely perish. But we labor for God, who created the heavens and the earth, and looks on those who believe in Him with favor. For this we sing songs of victory, rain or shine, height or depth, ease or toil, little or plenty. We seek not that our results would bring joy, but rejoice that our labor is in the Lord. Amen:) Can bring up to 3 hunters.
