Intro to this species—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.
Overview
Frog hunts are great fun. They are hunted with gigs at night. It is a distinctively Southern experience. Usually, hunters will patrol slowly along the edges of rivers or lakes, looking for their bright eyes reflecting off the beams of headlamps. Frog gigging is best done with two or more people. One will shine a bright light into the eyes of the frog, blinding it. While the frog is blinded, the other hunter will approach from behind and gig the frog. It's possible to gig many frogs in a single night. Some states have bag limits while others do not.
Frog hunts in South Florida are conducted as small‐group, nighttime airboat excursions into the Everglades and surrounding wetlands, with a maximum of three hunters per boat. Guided by local experts, trips include all gigging gear, underwater lights, and state‐required licenses and permits. Hunters pursue abundant bullfrogs and other native species under stealthy night conditions, then often have the option for field cleaning and bagging of frog legs. These family‐owned operations emphasize a relaxed, home-style atmosphere—ideal for both first-time giggers and veteran outdoorsmen seeking a hands-on, educational adventure in one of the country’s most iconic wetland ecosystems.
Frog hunts are generally organized as guided day trips into marshes, ponds and other wetland habitats, with no lodging or meals provided by the outfitter. Hunters should arrange their own accommodations—camping with a tent and sleeping bag or booking nearby lodging—and bring all necessary gear. Sleeping arrangements on-site are not supplied, nor are heating or cooling systems in temporary blinds or camps. Participants typically return to their chosen base each evening and are responsible for their own meals and field comforts.
We think these three hunts should be at the top of your list.

Frog FAQs
What you need to know before you book:
How challenging is it to hunt frog?
Frog hunting in South Florida is moderately accessible. Nighttime airboat rides and shallow‐water wading are involved, but guides handle navigation, lighting and gear setup. Hunters should be prepared for wet conditions, some boat movement and working under low-light conditions, but no specialized climbing or long treks are required.
What methods are commonly used to hunt frog?
The standard method is gigging from a low‐profile airboat or shallow water platform. Guides shine powerful underwater lights to locate bullfrogs and other species, then hunters use a handheld gig or pole spear to make the take. All necessary gear and state permits are provided by the outfitter.
Are hunts of frog more on public or private land?
Most frog hunts in the Everglades and surrounding wetlands take place on public conservation lands. Outfitters hold the required state permits to operate in parks, wildlife management areas and federally managed marshes. Occasionally, private ranch or canal systems are used, but the majority of trips are in public wetland habitat.
