Intro to this species—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.
Summary
The Snow Goose (Anser caerulescens) is a striking migratory waterfowl known for its distinctive white plumage, although some individuals exhibit a gray-brown coloration called the "Blue Goose" phase. One of the species' most notable features is its large size and robust build, characterized by a strong, straight bill and long neck, which make it easily identifiable in the field. Snow Geese are renowned for their impressive migratory patterns, typically traveling in large, noisy flocks that present exciting hunting opportunities during their seasonal migrations. Hunters targeting Snow Geese rely on a variety of effective strategies, including the use of decoys to mimic their natural congregations and calling techniques to attract birds within range. The species' tendency to feed in agricultural fields provides an ideal setting for waterfowl hunting, where hunters must adhere to proper regulations and ethical practices to ensure sustainable populations while enjoying the thrill of the chase.
Snow goose hunts capitalize on their massive winter aggregations in agricultural fields, impounded wetlands, flooded timber, and coastal marshes across major flyways. Guided daily by experienced waterfowl professionals (often with retrievers), hunters are transported to prime fields and set up in layout, pit, or skid blinds. Success hinges on large decoy spreads—ranging from a few hundred to over a thousand decoys of full-body and sock styles—combined with calling and precise positioning on the “X.” Hunts typically include all gear, field dressing or processing of birds, and often meals and lodging at nearby lodges or camps. Whether targeting high-volume bag limits in rice, corn, or wheat fields or drawing geese out of tidal marshes, snow goose trips offer a dynamic, immersive waterfowl experience for hunters of all skill levels.
Snow Goose hunts typically offer a mix of multi-day lodge packages and day-only outings. Overnight hunts are based in comfortable lodges with private or shared rooms furnished with beds, and most include meals as part of the package. Lodge facilities are equipped with modern climate-control systems to ensure a comfortable environment year-round. Day hunts do not provide lodging or sleeping arrangements, and meals are generally the responsibility of the hunter. Heating and cooling in the lodges meet contemporary standards, while day-hunt participants should plan for their own food and shelter needs before and after the field session.
We think these three hunts should be at the top of your list.

Top Notch Snow Goose Hunting in Delaware - Half Day Hunt
Centrally located between the huge tidal marshes of southern New Jersey and endless cornfields of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Delaware winters close to 500,000 snow geese annually. Delaware is home to two major snow geese roosts- the 16,000 acre Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge (Kent County) and the 9,900 acre Prime Hook Nationals Wildlife refuge. (Sussex County) Combined these refuges host over 400,000 snow geese each fall. Both refuges provide large fresh water impoundments and tidal marshes for snow geese.
We currently lease over 30 farms in Kent and Sussex county. We have farms covering a large area both close to and farther inland from the refuges. Since we have hunted these areas for over twenty years, we have leased only the best farms used by wintering snow geese.
Snow goose hunting requires a huge amount of decoys. We use mostly full bodies and some silo socks. More so than any other waterfowl, huge spreads of decoys are an important part to harvest snow geese. Being on the ‘X” is most important but we have had a lot of good hunts (25-50 birds) just getting under the birds and hunting traffic. 200 decoys was deadly ten years ago but today 1500 – 2000 decoys are needed for those same results.
Your guide will meet you at the hotel or at an assigned place at an assigned time. From the hotel you will follow your guide to the farm. Have your snacks, coffee, and refreshments ready for your morning hunt as we will not be stopping at a convenience store. Everyone will help in setting up the decoy spread. The guide calls all the shots. At the end of the hunt, everyone helps picking up the decoys.

Snow Goose FAQs
What you need to know before you book:
How does hunting snow goose compare to other waterfowl species?
Snow goose hunts are generally higher-volume and more fast-paced than most duck or Canada goose outings. Instead of smaller flocks in tight cover, you’re targeting massive roosts in open fields and marshes. Success depends on assembling large decoy spreads and precise calling to draw birds out over layout or pit blinds, creating a very dynamic experience compared to tree-lined ponds or narrow river corridors.
What methods are commonly used to hunt snow goose?
Hunters typically employ layout, pit or skid blinds set at the edge of agricultural fields, flooded timber or coastal marshes. Large decoy spreads—often 500 to 1,000 full-body and sock decoys—are arranged to mimic feeding flocks. Calling techniques range from simple clucks to full goose yelps, and many guides use retrievers to quickly collect downed birds in open water or flooded terrain.
What time of year is best for hunting snow goose?
The prime window runs from late fall through early spring, when snow geese stage in huge numbers on harvested rice, corn or wheat fields and coastal flats. Many hunters focus on December through February, when flocks concentrate heavily on agricultural foods before moving further south.

Southern New Jersey holds upwards of 150,000 snow geese during the fall and spring. Most of these birds are in Salem and Cumberland county. Generally the birds show up in late October and leave in mid-March. New jersey snow goose hunting presents two unique challenges. First, these birds sometimes will fly over to Delaware to feed for the day. Another second factor to contend with here in New Jersey are the huge tidal marshes where the birds roost. Generally the birds will not leave the marsh preferring to stay and feed on the salt hay fields that are so numerous in New Jersey tidal marshes. But once the weather turns cold that is when the birds head inland from 2- 20 miles to find higher protein food like corn, soybean or wheat.
We have farms in both Salem and Cumberland county. All or our farms are inland anywhere from 2 -12 miles from the roost areas for these birds. As mentioned above, our best hunting is the first cold snap when the birds head inland for high protein food. Snow geese prefer large farms and our farms vary in size from 60-415 acres. We have leased these farms for over ten years so we have a good idea of when they will use them. And of course we scout daily and have area farmers looking for us also.
Snow goose hunting requires a huge amount of decoys. We use mostly silosocks and some full bodies. More so than any other waterfowl, huge spreads of decoys are an important part to harvest snow geese. Being on the ‘X” is most important but we have had a lot of good hunts (25-50 birds) just getting under the birds and hunting traffic. 200 decoys was deadly ten years ago but today 500-1500 decoys are needed for those same results.
Generally our best hunting is when it gets cold and the birds head to the fields to feed. Another good time for us is February- March season for a couple reasons.
The conservation season begins and the e-callers really help decoys birds especially the small bunches and it also helps tremendously on traffic hunts.
Tens of thousands of snow geese move into our area this time of the season. They are starting to stage to head north and gradually move north along the tidal marshes as they stage. And lastly, like all waterfowl, windy days really produce especially when using Silosocks.
Remember we are hunting snow geese that are about as predictable as the weather. These are very skittish and finicky birds that have no real agenda when it comes to decoying. The rule with snow geese are there are no rules. Let the fun begin!
