Intro to this species—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.
Summary
The Tule elk (Cervus elaphus nannodes) is a distinctive subspecies of elk native to California, notable for its smaller stature and remarkable adaptations to the region's diverse habitats. Males typically weigh between 600 to 1,000 pounds and feature impressive antlers that can grow up to four feet in length, adorned with long tines that reflect their health and vigor. Their coat changes with the seasons, showcasing a reddish-brown hue in summer that transitions to a thicker, darker shag in winter. Hunting Tule elk requires a deep understanding of their behavior and habitat, as they often inhabit grasslands and oak woodlands. California's hunting regulations are stringent due to the species' conservation status, with specific zones and seasons designated for ethical hunting practices. Experienced hunters will benefit from strategic planning, including scouting and utilizing natural cover, to successfully target these majestic animals while contributing to the ongoing efforts in wildlife management and preservation.
Guided Tule elk hunts in California generally take place on mixed private and public ranchlands under private‐land management programs that secure both bull and cow tags. Bull hunts typically run about ten days during the peak rut (mid-July through September), while cow hunts are shorter—around two days—and often accommodate just two hunters per guide. Lodging is usually provided on multi-day packages. Hunters can expect to spend mornings and evenings glassing grassy foothills and reservoir country for trophy bulls commonly scoring in the 285–350+-inch class (well above Boone & Crockett minimum), then using spot-and-stalk techniques to close the distance. Herd management practices maintain high antler quality year to year, making these hunts appealing for trophy seekers and newcomers alike.
Tule Elk hunts typically include lodging options that range from ranch-style lodges and private cabins to well-equipped tent camps situated near prime elk country. Sleeping arrangements often feature beds or cots in either private rooms or shared bunk areas. While exact heating and cooling setups depend on the outfitter, most camps offer basic warmth—such as wood-burning or propane stoves—during cooler periods and ventilation or fans in warmer weather. Daily meals are provided, with hearty breakfasts, lunches and dinners served from a central camp kitchen or dining lodge.
We think these three hunts should be at the top of your list.

Tule Elk FAQs
What you need to know before you book:
What type of terrain should I expect when hunting Tule elk?
Tule elk hunts take place on mixed private and public ranchlands featuring grassy foothills, rolling pastures and reservoir shorelines. You’ll spend time glassing open hilltops and ridges at first light, then navigating gentle slopes and creek bottoms during spot-and-stalk forays.
What methods are commonly used to hunt Tule elk?
Guides employ a combination of glassing and spot-and-stalk techniques. Calling techniques may also be used to locate bulls in rut.
Is hunting Tule elk a good fit for new hunters?
Yes. These guided hunts cater to all experience levels, with low hunter‐to‐guide ratios and managed herds that produce plentiful trophy bulls. Lodging, meals and experienced guides help newcomers learn elk behavior, glassing skills and stalking principles in a supportive setting.
