We think these three hunts should be at the top of your list.
The Ultimate Alaska Combo Hunt: Dall Sheep, Brown Bear, Black Bear, and Caribou, 10 day
Sheep opens August 10th and most the sheep are harvested the first 10 days of the season. The King and Red Salmon runs have both typically hit by now which brings a lot of new Brown/Grizzlies to the area. Best time of year for Brown/Grizzly Bear. A second Brown/Grizzly Bear may be harvested for an addition trophy fee of $5000 and second Black Bear for $750.
Hunt fees include equipped camps, guide services, transportation in the field, meals, and field preparation of trophies. Fees do not include your license, big game tags, transportation round trip to Rainy Pass Lodge (at this time $1200 per person & subject to change), hotel accommodations, before, during, or after the hunt, or gratuities. Weather permitting you will be flown to the lodge the day before your hunt and you will leave the lodge the day after your hunt.
We welcome your non-hunting guests along to photograph, video, or just tag along to share in your hunt. We do have limited accommodations for this and it must be arranged ahead of time. The cost for a non-hunting guest is $8,500.
Rainy Pass Lodge is your well-appointed, yet rustic-luxury hunting lodge in the heart of the Alaska Range. Below are a few highlights to help you fully understand what Rainy Pass Lodge has to offer. We hunt right out of the main lodge as well as out of more remote log cabins scattered throughout hundreds of miles of untamed wilderness.
We feature fair chase hunting opportunities for multiple species. The land is so vast and untouched that there are animals here that have never seen a human before – this is the ultimate in fair chase old-world hunting. Our primary method of hunting is spot and stalk which is very successful for the type of terrain and animal habits in our area. We typically use ‘look-out’ spots to locate the game, sometimes as far away as 5-6 miles, and having horses truly makes those animals attainable. Although we usually do not have to go that far, it’s nice to have options.
We have roughly 80% repeat and referral clientele and have had the pleasure of hunting with multiple generations on many occasions. We aim to provide you with a true hunting adventure that will become a tradition as you pass down your hunting heritage to your kids and grandchildren. We will gladly provide you with a reference list for personal experiences and perspectives. E-MAIL us to request a reference list.
We like to train our guides in-house rather than hiring from an outside pool of unemployed guides as many outfitters do. This insures that we provide you with properly trained guides to meet the service standards we demand. As well as having guides that are familiar with the area, camps, horses and animals. Meet our GUIDES.

Eight Day Caribou Hunt - Big Bulls
The Caribou are the only species in my hunt area that are not an over the counter tag but rather a drawing permit. Therefore the Caribou are an additional species added on to a Fall Sheep, Moose or Bear hunt on a trophy fee basis. If a hunter wants to participate in the drawing they need to put in the December before the year of their hunt.
Typically the hunter will contact me in December of the year before their hunt and I will “walk” them through the process of applying online for the permit. The drawing application period is from November 1 – December 15 at 5 pm AKST. You can find the permit application at http://hunt.alaska.gov. The probability of drawing is about 8-10% but if you do you can expect to take a nice Bull as this Herd consistently produces trophy animals. There is also an $8,500 trophy fee.

About Our Barren-Ground Caribou Hunts in Alaska
Most important info about these hunts—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.
Summary & Terrain
Barren-ground caribou hunts in Alaska offer a rare opportunity to pursue one of North America’s most migratory big game species across true Arctic tundra. Access is by drawing permit only—these tags are not available over the counter—and hunts generally take place in expansive, open-country habitats where low shrubs, lichen fields, and rolling hills allow for excellent visibility but also expose hunters to the elements. Remote spike camps or fly-in lodges are reached by bush plane, often landing on gravel bars or frozen lakes, and provide a base for exploring vast caribou ranges that can stretch for miles in any direction.
While caribou may be easier to spot than more secretive species, they can be challenging to close with due to their wariness and the flat, open terrain. Most guided hunts rely on glass-and-stalk techniques, combining aerial scouting with careful ground approaches into the wind. Hunters should be prepared for moderate physical demands—long glassing sessions, occasional wet stream crossings, and brisk Arctic winds. Success hinges on patience, sharp optics, and the guidance of experienced outfitters familiar with herd movement patterns.
Barren-ground caribou hunts in Alaska are typically based out of well-insulated cabins or lodges situated near key migration routes. Accommodations feature private or shared rooms equipped with standard beds, ensuring restful nights after long days in the field. Heating is provided via wood-burning stoves or modern climate-control systems, keeping living areas warm and dry even in cold weather. Common lodge amenities often include communal dining and gathering spaces, gear storage, and basic utilities, striking a balance between rustic Alaskan character and the comforts hunters need to stay ready and comfortable.
Barren-ground caribou season typically runs from early to late fall, peaking in September and October when bulls display full antler racks. Permit applications open November 1 and close December 15 of the prior year, with draw odds generally around eight to ten percent. Trophy fees are applied once drawn, and most outfitters bundle these hunts with other fall opportunities like sheep, moose, or bear. Camps are usually semi-mobile, offering heated tents or cabins, full meal service, field dressing, meat care, and trophy skinning. For those fortunate enough to draw a tag, the Alaska tundra promises a true wilderness adventure and the chance at a world-class caribou bull.
Barren-ground caribou hunts in Alaska average around $33,000. Costs rise or fall based on hunt duration, season timing and access to prime migration corridors, as well as the quality and privacy of the lodge or cabin accommodations. Lower-cost packages generally feature shorter stays, shared rooms and larger guide-to-hunter ratios, while mid-level options add private rooms, longer itineraries and more personalized guiding. Premium hunts include exclusive camp locations, extended trip lengths, top-tier amenities and comprehensive trophy care and meat-processing services.
FAQs
What you need to know before you book:
What type of terrain should I expect when hunting barren-ground caribou in Alaska?
Hunts typically take place in tundra landscapes adjacent to migration corridors. You’ll encounter rolling hills, wide gravel bars along braided rivers, marshy flats, and occasional spruce-lined ridges. Cabins or lodges are situated within easy distance of these zones, but daily outings often involve hiking over soft tundra, crossing shallow streams, and glassing from low benches to spot moving herds.
What time of year is best for hunting barren-ground caribou in Alaska?
The prime season runs from late August through early October. That’s when caribou are on fall migration, moving in large, predictable groups toward wintering grounds. Cooler temperatures and the rut also make them more active during daylight hours. Early season hunts can be wetter, while later hunts bring crisper weather and colorful tundra foliage.
Is hunting barren-ground caribou in Alaska a good fit for new hunters?
Yes, especially with a guided outfit. Lodges provide warm cabins, meals, and gear storage, while one-on-one guides tailor each day’s pace and challenges to your experience level. You’ll learn spotting and stalking techniques, how to handle meat care, and safe firearm practices. Physically, you should be ready for moderate hikes over uneven ground, but the supportive environment makes it accessible for newcomers.
