About Our Blue-Winged Teal Hunts in Arkansas
Most important info about these hunts—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.
Summary & Terrain
Arkansas is renowned for its spring and fall migrations of blue-winged teal, making it a premier destination for waterfowl enthusiasts. These small, fast-moving ducks concentrate in shallow, flooded fields, rice flats, river sloughs and managed wetlands across eastern Arkansas. Hunters can access a mix of private and public wetlands—often via raised blinds along levees or portable pit blinds on flooded timber—that offer excellent visibility and prime calling locations. The flat, open terrain interspersed with cattail marshes and flooded agricultural tracts provides both abundant habitat for teal and convenient access for guided parties.
Blue-winged teal hunting in Arkansas combines moderate physical effort with tactical calling and decoy work. Most hunts begin before first light, with guides setting out compact teal spreads and calling aggressively to bring birds into range. Shots tend to be fast and close, so quick target acquisition and familiarity with 12- or 20-gauge setups are essential. Hunters typically sit in small blinds or pit blinds, following strict safety protocols—firearms remain unloaded until seated and only the guide calls the shot. Many outfitters include dog work or boat support for efficient bird retrieval, and experienced guides handle field-dressing and tagging to streamline the day.
Blue-winged teal hunts in Arkansas are offered either as multi-day packages with comfortable lodge accommodations or as day-only outings without overnight lodging. Lodge stays feature private or shared rooms with beds and full modern climate control, including heating and air conditioning. Day hunts provide guided hunting from morning until evening, allowing participants to return home each day without on-site sleeping or climate systems.
Blue-winged teal seasons in Arkansas generally fall in early fall migration—often from late September through October—subject to state waterfowl regulations. Morning hunts usually wrap up by mid-morning, giving guests time to return to well-appointed lodges offering private bathrooms, chef-prepared Southern-style meals and creature comforts like big-screen TVs, game rooms and fire pits. Packages often include guide services, all required permits, transportation to blinds, decoy setups, and full processing and packaging of harvested birds. For more independent hunters, some outfitters also offer blind rentals on public Corps of Engineers land with the option to bring your own dog or ATV.
Blue-winged teal hunts in Arkansas generally average around $1,200 per hunter. Day-only hunts—without lodging—typically run in the $350–$500 per-day range and include guide services, decoys, field guidance and basic bird cleaning. Multi-day lodge packages, offering private or shared climate-controlled rooms and meals, usually start near $900 for shorter weekend trips and can climb to $1,500 or more for longer stays or upgraded accommodations. Pricing varies with factors such as trip duration, room type, group size and amenities (airport transfers, specialized blinds, meal plans and full processing of harvested birds). Guides, equipment setup and field care of harvested game are included in most packages.
FAQs
What you need to know before you book:
What type of terrain should I expect when hunting blue-winged teal in Arkansas?
Blue-winged teal in Arkansas are typically hunted over flooded rice fields, natural moist-soil impoundments and shallow marshes across the Mississippi Delta region. Most guides establish pit blinds cut into levees or use low-profile layout blinds on the flats. Terrain is flat and accessible by ATV or 4x4, but hunters should be prepared to walk short distances through water up to ankle or knee height.
What time of year is best for hunting blue-winged teal in Arkansas?
The prime window for blue-winged teal is the early teal season, which generally opens in mid-September. During this period, teal migration peaks and flocks pour into Arkansas rice fields. While teal remain present through the general duck season (October–January), early teal hunts often yield higher daily limits and more consistent action.
What methods are commonly used to hunt blue-winged teal in Arkansas?
Guides employ a combination of pit or layout blinds, decoy spreads of 15–30 realistic teal and mallard decoys, and high-pitched whistles or single-reed calls to mimic feeding teal. Most packages include one-on-one guide service, and many hunts use trained retrievers to pick up downed ducks. Whether you’re on a day-hunt or staying at a lodge, the approach remains the same: set up near active feeding flats, keep low, call sparingly and let the decoys do the work.

5 star lodging accommodations, maid service, fresh linens, private bathrooms, meals prepared by on-site chef, multiple big screen tv's, pool table, fire pits, transportation to and from blind, bird retrieval, decoys, bird processing and packaging, experienced hunting guide and prime hunting locations
When hunting with Duck Down Guide Service, you should expect a quality hunting experience with a professional hardworking guide.
Upon meeting your guide at the agreed location, you and your crew will load your gear in a crew cab side by side or boat and your guide will drive you to the blind or hunting location. All firearms should remain unloaded until seated in the blind and your guide is ready to hunt. For your safety and the benefit of the hunt, nobody shoots until your guide calls the shot.
We want everyone to enjoy their experience, so we ask that everyone listen and take the advice given to you by your hunting guide.
Safety is a major concern. If anyone in your blind is being careless with their firearm, we ask that you notify your guide and he will address the issue.
Morning hunts last until 10am. At this time your guide will start to gather the gear and prepare for the ride out.
If you have questions about how or where to have your birds processed or how to properly tag them, your guide will be happy to assist you.
