About Our Mule Deer Hunts in Wyoming

Most important info about these hunts—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary & Terrain

Wyoming offers some of the best mule deer hunting in North America, combining vast private ranches and quality public allotments. Hunts typically take place in rolling sagebrush plains, agricultural bottoms, and timbered foothills at elevations from 5,000 to 9,000 feet. On private ranches, abundant water sources and well-managed habitat concentrate deer into accessible pockets. In higher country, mature bucks move between summer feed grounds and sheltered bedding areas, offering glassing opportunities from ridgelines or early-morning vantage points. Whether you’re on a family-run ranch or a larger outfitter’s spread, you’ll experience true western scenery and consistently healthy deer herds.

Difficulty & Strategy

Most Wyoming mule deer hunts are classified as moderate in difficulty, suitable for hunters of varying ages and fitness levels. Guided spot-and-stalk is the predominant method, with some operations supplementing horses, ATVs, or ground blinds to reach key coverts more efficiently. Morning glassing sessions often identify bucks feeding along ridges, followed by tactical stalking through sage flats or timber edges. Archery hunts add a layer of challenge, with ground-blind or waterhole ambushes and close-range spot stalks. Regardless of weapon choice, experienced guides manage logistics, camp chores, and field dressing so hunters can focus on tracking and shot opportunities.

Amenities

Mule deer hunts in Wyoming offer a range of lodging options, from fully appointed lodges with private bedrooms, comfortable beds and modern climate control to more rustic tent camps and spike camps in the backcountry. Lodge stays typically include shared dining and heated common areas, while tent camps feature cots or simple beds and are often warmed by wood-burning stoves or basic propane heaters. Camps are strategically placed near prime mule deer country—ridges, draws and seasonal feeding grounds—to keep travel time low and maximize hunting opportunities. Whether you prefer a high-comfort basecamp or a traditional wilderness experience, outfitters maintain clean, well-supplied camps and provide personalized guiding to suit both seasoned hunters and newcomers.

Season & Additional Info

Archery season generally opens in early September—sometimes coinciding with full-velvet bucks—while rifle seasons start in October. Drawing a Wyoming mule deer tag often requires preference points, though private-land hunts on ranches with reserved tags can offer near-certain opportunities. Many outfitters run two-species packages, pairing mule deer with antelope in the midday hours for added value. Hunts typically span five days, include lodging, meals, guide service, and field dressing, and integrate meat processing or game handling. With consistently high success rates and robust tag draws on private ground, Wyoming remains a top choice for hunters seeking trophy-class mule deer in a classic western setting.

Pricing

Mule deer hunts in Wyoming typically average around $6,400 per hunter. Prices vary based on several key factors: trip length (most span 3–5 days of hunting), type of lodging (rustic spike camps at the entry level versus fully appointed lodges with private rooms and climate control), and the level of guiding support provided. Basic packages generally include shared camp accommodations, simple meals, guiding and field care of your trophy, while mid-tier options add private lodge rooms, upgraded dining, additional scouting time and often better terrain access. At the top end, hunters can expect longer stays, premium lodging, gourmet meals and personalized concierge service. Most outfitters’ rates cover transportation to and from hunting grounds, guiding, meals, and processing of your mule deer trophy in camp. Additional costs to plan for include state licenses and tags, guide gratuities and any optional services such as taxidermy or trophy shipping.

5-Day Mule Deer Hunt (Private Land
Archery mule deer hunts begin September 1 and rifle hunts begin on October 1. Early archery hunts (first week of September) offer an excellent opportunity to harvest a full velvet mule deer buck! Archery hunts are typically spot-and-stalk style hunts however we occasionally hunt water or food sources from a ground blind as well. These hunts are extremely successful, we’ve been about 90% for the past 10 seasons on trophy caliber mule deer. We are all bowhunters ourselves and completely understand what it takes to be successful with archery equipment.

4-Day Mule Deer Hunts (Private Land)
Big Horn Outfitters offers excellent mule deer hunting opportunities in Wyoming Game and Fish regions: C & Y. We harvest excellent deer every year averaging between 150-165″, with many larger deer harvested each year. You can expect to see good numbers of animals and have opportunities at respectable bucks during your hunt. For the most part, these hunts are only mildly physical and can be enjoyed by hunters of all ages and abilities. Success rates are generally 100% each year; the only hunters that haven’t harvested their deer were looking for a specific animal and simply chose not to take any others during their hunt. These deer hunts book up extremely fast, generally 2-4 years in advance, and they all require 2 or more preference points to draw the tag in Wyoming. The Montana tag is a general deer license and will currently take 1 point to draw.
