About Our Rocky Mountain Elk Hunts in Idaho

Most important info about these hunts—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary & Terrain

Idaho’s backcountry is renowned for its exceptional Rocky Mountain elk hunting, drawing both rifle and archery hunters to its rugged National Forest terrain. Hunters can choose from fully guided lodge hunts, remote drop-camp experiences, or semi-guided ATV and horse-supported excursions. The elk roam a mosaic of habitats—from steep ridgelines, rocky gullies, and high-elevation basins to open clearcuts and grassy meadows—offering diverse opportunities for spot-and-stalk pursuits throughout the season.

Difficulty & Strategy

Hunting difficulty ranges from moderate to challenging, depending on your chosen method. Archery hunters often glass from wall-tents or high benches before making a slow stalk on foot, while rifle hunters may rely on ATV or horse support to cover more ground and reach higher elevations. Drop camps require self-sufficiency, with hunters packing in and out by horse or on foot, managing a lightweight kit, and field-dressing game. Guided lodge hunts provide more comforts—daily packouts of harvested elk, home-cooked meals, and team support—making them accessible to a wider range of hunters.

Amenities

Rocky Mountain elk hunts in Idaho typically use a combination of a central lodge and multiple field tent camps to balance comfort with backcountry access. The lodge provides private rooms with standard beds and modern climate control to ensure a restful start and finish to each hunt. Once in the field, hunters stay in insulated canvas tents outfitted with cots for sleeping and heated by wood-burning stoves, offering reliable warmth during cool mountain mornings and evenings. Both lodging types are arranged to support guided elk hunts, allowing easy access to prime elk habitat while maintaining a level of comfort suited to both new and experienced hunters.

Season & Additional Info

Elk season in Idaho typically opens with archery in September, when cooler nights and changing foliage make for scenic—and often wetter—conditions. Rifle season runs through October and November, bringing colder temperatures and occasional snow that push elk into lower timbered slopes. Most packages run five to seven days, with drop camps often requiring a small-group minimum and a gear weight limit. Licenses, tags, food, personal gear, and meat processing fees are generally not included, so hunters should confirm requirements and prepare accordingly before heading into the high country.

Pricing

Guided Rocky Mountain elk hunts in Idaho listed on our site average around $6,100 per hunter. Pricing generally reflects a multi-day, small-group or one-on-one format, with costs influenced by hunt length, guide ratio, lodging style and included amenities. Lower-cost options often feature shorter trip durations, shared guide teams and basic tent camps in the backcountry. Mid-level packages typically incorporate a combination of central-lodge nights (private rooms with climate control) and insulated canvas tent camps with wood-stove heat, plus a dedicated guide. Premium hunts extend the stay, offer exclusive access to private or high-density elk areas, feature upgraded camp setups or private-room lodge accommodations throughout, and include full field care of trophies and harvest processing. In almost every case, meals, camp transport and professional skinning or quartering services are covered in the quoted price.
