About Our Sharp-Tailed Grouse Hunts in Montana

Most important info about these hunts—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary & Terrain

Montana’s vast private ranchlands provide some of the best sharp-tailed grouse hunting in North America. Hunters gain exclusive access to over 100,000 acres of mixed grass prairie, CRP fields, sagebrush draws, and coulees—habitats where sharp-tails thrive alongside ring-necked pheasants and the occasional Hungarian partridge. These rolling, open landscapes create classic upland opportunities, with ample bird numbers and minimal hunting pressure ensuring frequent flushes and high daily encounters.

Difficulty & Strategy

Hunts range from moderate to moderately strenuous, requiring steady walking across varied cover and working closely with well-trained pointing dogs. Most days follow a traditional spot-and-stalk upland format: guides glass or scout feeding areas, position hunters downwind, and then signal the dog to quarter until birds are located and flushed. Some outfitters also offer morning waterfowl or mixed-species combo hunts, using decoy spreads in marshes or ponds before transitioning to upland fields in the afternoon. Personalized instruction in dog handling, birdcraft, and wing-shooting makes these packages approachable for newcomers while still challenging seasoned hunters.

Amenities

Sharp-tailed grouse hunts in Montana are typically staged from remote canvas or wall tents, each heated by a wood-burning stove for reliable warmth during cool mornings and evenings. Sleeping arrangements consist of sturdy cots outfitted with sleeping pads and blankets. Camps often include a communal tent or sheltered area for gear storage, meal prep and dining, making for a straightforward, rustic setup that places hunters close to prime upland grouse habitat while providing essential shelter and comfort.

Season & Additional Info

The sharp-tailed grouse season in Montana typically opens in early September and runs through mid-December, aligning with state regulations for upland game. Multi-day, all-inclusive packages usually span three to five days and encompass lodging in ranch cabins or field bunkhouses, meals, guide services, and ground transportation. Weather can shift from warm sunshine to brisk winds or light snow, so layered clothing and durable boots are recommended. At season’s end, most outfitters will assist with bird cleaning and packaging, allowing hunters to take home their grouse and pheasant limits with ease.

Pricing

Sharp-tailed grouse hunts in Montana typically average around $3,600. Most packages span 3 to 5 days and include one-on-one or small-group guiding, canvas or wall-tent lodging with wood-stove heat, meals, and basic upland camp comforts. The lower end of the price range usually covers short trips, shared guide ratios, and simpler tent camps. Mid-range hunts often add extra days, more remote or private properties, and dedicated bird dogs. At the top end, hunters may opt for upgraded tent setups or rustic cabins and extended itineraries for higher bag limits. Field care—plucking, packaging, and transport of your birds—is generally included, while licenses, tags, and gratuities are extra.
