About Our Shiras Moose Hunts in Idaho

Most important info about these hunts—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary & Terrain

Shiras moose are among North America’s largest game animals, known for their massive antlers and imposing size. In Idaho’s Unit 54—an area of nearly 900 square miles along the Nevada border—these moose inhabit a mosaic of habitats, from clearcuts and regenerating timber stands to riparian corridors and high mountain benches. Access into the backcountry typically begins with a 4x4 ride to a staging area, followed by foot or horseback travel into more remote country. Outfitters often operate both lodge‐based hunts and pack‐in drop camps, allowing hunters to tailor their experience to comfort and wilderness intensity.

Difficulty & Strategy

Hunting Shiras moose demands moderate to high physical effort and solid backcountry skills. Those choosing drop camps must be prepared to ride eight or more hours in and out, set up in pre‐stocked tent camps, and manage their own daily logistics. Lodge‐based options reduce packing requirements but still involve glassing on ridgelines, stalks through dense regeneration areas, and careful wind management. Both rifle and archery methods are common; hunters may also pursue wolves if they hold the appropriate tag. Success hinges on good scouting, use of natural funnels along stream bottoms and cutblocks, and steady, ethical shot placement.

Amenities

Shiras moose hunts in Idaho typically feature a mix of permanent lodges and more remote camps, with accommodations ranging from climate-controlled lodge rooms and cabins to heated tent sites. Sleeping arrangements include comfortable beds in the lodge or cabin and sturdy cots in the tent camps. Heating is provided by modern climate control systems in the lodge and cabin, while tent camps rely on wood-burning stoves to keep hunters warm between outings. These setups offer a balance of rustic charm and essential comforts, ensuring a restful base for guided hunts across Idaho’s diverse moose habitat.

Season & Additional Info

Moose tags in Idaho are awarded through a limited‐entry lottery administered by Idaho Fish & Game, with seasons generally falling in early to mid‐fall (exact dates vary by unit). Typical hunts last two to five days, with the option to add extra days in most programs. While many outfitters include camp setup, transportation, field dressing, and lodging or drop‐camp facilities, applicants should budget separately for licenses, tag fees, meat processing, guide gratuities, and personal gear. Given the remoteness of Unit 54, hunters are advised to carry satellite communication devices, layered clothing for variable mountain weather, and solid navigation tools.

Pricing

Shiras Moose hunts in Idaho average around $7,600 per hunter. Entry-level packages often begin in the $5,000 range and include 3–4 days of guided hunting, meals, ground transport, and lodging in a permanent lodge or cabin. Mid-tier hunts, running around the average price, add heated tent camps, more extensive scouting and glassing, and smaller guide-to-hunter ratios over 4–6 days. At the premium end, 6–8 day expeditions into remote spike camps with one-on-one guiding can approach $10,000–$12,000. Most outfitters cover guiding, accommodations, meals, and base camp logistics; license and tag fees, meat processing, trophy prep or shipment, and gratuities are typically extra.
