About Our Wolf Hunts

Intro to this species—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary

The wolf (Canis lupus) is a highly adaptive and social carnivore known for its remarkable hunting skills and complex pack dynamics, making it a fascinating subject for wildlife enthusiasts and hunters alike. Characterized by its keen sense of smell, acute hearing, and stamina, the wolf engages in strategic hunting, often targeting larger ungulates through coordinated pack tactics. These animals exhibit a varied coat ranging from pure white to deep black, aiding their camouflage in diverse environments. When hunting wolves, one must consider their extensive territory ranges and migratory patterns, as well as adhere to ethical practices that promote sustainable wildlife management. Understanding their behavior, vocalizations, and signs can greatly enhance the hunting experience while ensuring respect for this apex predator and its vital role in the ecosystem.

Hunt Features

Wolf hunts in Alaska typically run through the deep‐winter months, offering an immersive predator-calling and tracking experience across hundreds of miles of snow-covered tundra and forest. Most trips employ snowmobiles, ATVs or 4-wheel trucks to reach remote traplines or ambush sites, with guided parties covering 50–150 miles per day. Hunting methods blend electronic or mouth calls with foothold traps and snares, plus traditional spot-and-stalk once wolves are located. Accommodations range from rustic back-country cabins to comfortable lodges with home-cooked meals, and fully outfitted unguided options are available for highly experienced hunters prepared to self-navigate and camp. Whether you prefer a hands-on guide or a self-reliant winter expedition, wolf hunts deliver challenging travel, spectacular scenery and the reward of a premium pelt.

Amenities

Wolf hunts are typically based out of rustic cabins or sturdy tent camps located in prime wolf habitat. Accommodations include beds or other simple sleeping surfaces, ensuring a restful night after a long day in the field. Heating is provided by wood-burning stoves in many cabins, with some locations offering modern climate control, while tents rely on propane heaters or natural insulation. Daily meals are prepared onsite, giving hunters the fuel needed for early departures and extended tracking sessions. Professional guides handle all camp logistics so you can focus on the hunt.

Wolf Hunt With Horses or Snowmobiles (Aug-Apr)
These hunts are conducted primarily by snowmobile in GMU’s 13 and 20. I run three different traplines encompassing over three hundred miles. If the hunter would like an opportunity to harvest a Lynx or Wolverine they will have to come join me in the dead of the Alaskan winter (December – February). I won’t promise warm weather but I will guarantee you some of the most scenic snowmobiling on earth and lots of it! Wolf hunting Alaska style is always rewarding. We will do some calling for predators as well as setting traps and snares in locales that are likely spots to produce results. Typically we will snowmobile between 50-150 miles a day in search of Wolves, Wolverine, Lynx, Coyote and Fox. If you are looking to only do wolf hunting in Alaska then later in the winter is the prime time. We will stay at several of my cabins for two and three day stints looking for predators to call and/or trap. These hunts have become increasingly popular over the years so much so that I can’t even break away to attend a show to promote my business. If the hunter wants to harvest some of the most luxurious fur on the face of the earth then this hunt is for you.

Drop Camp Backcountry Hunt for Black, Wolverine and/or Wolf
I offer a limited number of unguided hunts in southwestern Alaska. Unguided hunts should not be taken lightly. In my career, I have witnessed several experienced hunters/outdoorsmen be overwhelmed by the Alaskan wilderness. I have also seen several hunters come out early because they were not physically and mentally ready for the challenge. Don't let this happen to you. That being said, an unguided hunt in Alaska is one of the most rewarding hunts an avid hunter can experience. You should consider this type of hunt if you are in excellent physical fitness, have a “can-do” attitude, practical hunting experience, and possess excellent wilderness survival skills such as map reading, first aid, camping, and orienteering. When done, you will be able to say that you guided yourself hunting on the Last Frontier. I will fully outfit you with enough food and gear for the duration of your hunt. I supply modern gear in excellent working condition. I will provide a gear list for you. When you are compiling your gear, do not be tempted to bring the same kind and quantity of gear you would take on a Rocky Mountain elk hunt. Don't be afraid to call me with questions like this and I will do my best to get you squared away. Non-guided hunter groups will need to make a $500 gear deposit to cover lost or damaged gear. If the gear is returned and not damaged, the full gear deposit will be refunded. Non-guided hunters must also view a video about legal animals and meat care. I will send you the video and a form to sign and send into the State of Alaska. You cannot go into the field until the State receives your signed form. Fully outfitted unguided hunts allow you to take moose, wolverine, wolf, and black bear.
