About Our Black Bear Hunts in Colorado

Most important info about these hunts—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary & Terrain

Colorado offers some of the most scenic and productive black bear hunting in the West, with hunts staged from base camps perched on canyon rims, mesas and high‐elevation timberlines. Guided trips typically run five nights, with accommodation at a central camp—often near the Black Canyon of the Gunnison—or in remote drop camps set by pack string. Elevations range from 8,000 to 11,400 feet, and terrain varies from sage-choked benches and slickrock mesas to dense pine–fir timberlines. Hunters travel by horseback or on foot, glassing canyon walls, saddles and ridgelines for feeding and bedding bears.

Difficulty & Strategy

These hunts demand moderate fitness and a willingness to work at altitude. Most black bear takes come via spot-and-stalk using rifle or bow, with guides moving hunters quietly into known bear travel corridors. Early-season camps near timberline allow quick access on foot, while mid-season trips often require two or more hours in the saddle to reach productive canyon country. Drop-camp options cater to experienced hunters who want a more self-sufficient style, but still benefit from pack-in logistics and occasional day-guiding support.

Amenities

Black bear hunts in Colorado typically combine comfortable lodge accommodations with more rustic tent camps, all positioned close to prime bear habitat. Lodges offer private or shared rooms furnished with beds and modern climate control systems, while tent camps provide cots and wood-burning stoves for warmth and a traditional backcountry feel. Common facilities such as dining areas and gear storage support daily operations. Heating options range from central HVAC in lodges to wood stoves in camps, ensuring hunters stay comfortable in varying weather conditions. Guided hunts generally include field-dressing assistance and professional trophy care as part of the experience.

Season & Additional Info

Black bear tags on private land in Colorado are available over-the-counter in September, so there’s no license draw for these guided hunts. Hunters supply their own state license, weapon and personal gear; guides handle camp setup, meals, field dressing and trophy care. Bear tags can be added to combo elk or mule deer hunts without extra tag fees. With guide ratios of one guide per two hunters, these five-night hunts deliver ample opportunity for both newcomers and seasoned hunters seeking a true Western adventure.

Pricing

Colorado black bear hunts generally start around $5,500 on average. These packages typically run three to five days and include guided excursions into prime bear country, daily meals, and lodging—either at a comfortable lodge with private or shared rooms or in a more rustic tent camp with wood‐stove heating. Trophy care (field dressing, skinning, salting, and transport to a taxidermist) is usually built into the price. Entry‐level hunts tend to feature group departures and simple camp accommodations. Mid‐tier options upgrade to private lodge rooms, additional scouting on foot or by vehicle, and smaller guide‐to‐hunter ratios. Premium hunts offer extended durations, exclusive access to high‐density bear areas, and fully personalized guiding services. Note that state licenses, tags, travel to the hunt base, and gratuities for guides are typically extra.
