About Our Merriam's Wild Turkey Hunts in Colorado

Most important info about these hunts—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Summary & Terrain

Colorado’s Merriam’s wild turkey hunts offer an exceptional springtime adventure across a mix of public and private landscapes. Turks are concentrated along river corridors, canyon breaks, and rolling sage-covered hills, with prime areas found in units such as the Arkansas River valley and adjoining private ranchlands. Birds frequent pinyon-juniper draws, riparian woodlands, agricultural fields, and open flats. Hunters can encounter mature toms strutting on ridge-top roosts, feeding in low-lying pastures, or moving through brush-lined creek bottoms, providing diverse terrain and outstanding viewing opportunities.

Difficulty & Strategy

While not as physically demanding as high-country mountain hunts, turkey hunting requires keen patience, precise calling, and stealthy movement. Success hinges on early-morning roost-break setups or well-placed blinds and decoys along known travel routes. Guided 1×1 or 2×1 formats help tailor strategies to individual skill levels—whether spot-and-stalk tactics in open draws or still-hunting through timber edges. Calling sequences (yelps, purrs, clucks, cackles) and careful scouting of roost locations are critical. Hunters should be prepared for moderate hikes over uneven ground and quick glassing to pick out a tom amid feeding flocks.

Amenities

Merriam’s wild turkey hunts in Colorado typically include guided outings paired with comfortable lodging options. Most outfitters accommodate hunters in local hotels or purpose-built lodges where standard beds are provided. In some cases, more rustic or camp-style accommodations may be offered, though details can vary by provider. Heating and cooling are generally handled by modern climate control systems in the permanent structures, ensuring comfortable temperatures throughout the season. This setup appeals to both first-time turkey hunters and seasoned sportsmen who appreciate a reliable, low-stress basecamp between morning and evening hunts.

Season & Additional Info

Spring seasons typically open in April and run through May, with over-the-counter tags available in many units. Most outfitters offer two- to three-day packages that include guiding, lodging (ranch cabins or remote tent camps), meals, and field dressing. Additional species such as coyotes or prairie dogs can often be added to private-land hunts. While license and tag fees are extra, processing of meat and capes is usually handled in camp. This blend of high turkey densities, varied terrain, and tailored hunt formats makes Colorado an ideal destination for both novice and experienced Merriam’s turkey hunters.

Premium hunts offer small group or one-on-one guiding, access to private ranchlands and food plots, and extended in-field support, with costs rising above the average. Spring Gobbler, Merriam's Turkey; 3-Day; Unit 741; Meals & Lodging Not Included
Turkey hunting in Colorado is unlike any kind of turkey hunt that most people have experienced. This area of SW Colorado has vast mountains, rolling hills, deep canyons loaded with juniper and pinon pine, and river bottoms that intersect the mesas that sweep down from the San Juan Mountains, which serve as a magnificent backdrop for our hunts. One common thing among all out turkey hunts is the heart-pounding experience of chasing or calling in a big tom during the spring. Our Merriam's Turkey hunts are done exclusively during the Spring season when the birds are fired up and looking for hens. Our guides have many years of Colorado turkey hunting experience under their belts and know how to call in a big tom or make the perfect setup for bow or gun hunters to get the shot they need. On your guided turkey hunt, you can hunt over 5,000 acres of private ground with a great Merriam's turkey population. Our ranch has several types of habitat including riparian river bottom, agricultural fields, thick juniper and pinon pine cover, deep valleys, and open mountain meadows. This is a fully guided turkey hunt with the primary hunting tactic being spot & stalk, sitting, waiting, calling, and using decoys in the right scenarios to bring the birds to you...or chasing the gobbles on foot which is always very exciting!

Spring Turkey Hunt in Colorado
While turkey hunting and elk hunting have some similarities in calling and habitat, there are significant differences, especially in how turkeys respond to movement and calling, making turkey hunting a more challenging and mentally demanding experience. Your Merriam's turkey hunt of a lifetime may take place on either public or private land. With the abundance of turkeys available, you can expect plenty of action each day of your hunt. You can choose to hunt by sitting in one of our man-made blinds or by utilizing spot and stalk techniques. We will employ various calling methods, including yelping, clucking, purring, cackling, and more, to attract the birds. If you have experience with calling, you're welcome to call in your own bird. The key to a successful turkey hunt is thorough scouting and a good understanding of the terrain. Our experienced guides know where the birds are roosting and their likely travel routes throughout the day. Prior to your arrival, we will spend a few days preparing and scouting for your Merriam turkey hunt, ensuring we set up close to the roost. We provide lodging and meals as part of our package. Depending on the hunting location, accommodations may be either a room or a tent if we are in remote areas.
