Deer

Deer hunting is a popular and rewarding pursuit, attracting outdoor enthusiasts with its blend of strategy, skill, and appreciation for nature. This category encompasses various species, including whitetail, mule, and elk deer, each presenting unique challenges and rewards for hunters. Whitetail deer, known for their keen senses and elusive behavior, require stealth and patience, making them an exciting target for seasoned and novice hunters alike. Mule deer, with their distinctive large ears and agile movements, often inhabit rugged terrains, providing opportunities for stalk hunting that can test one’s endurance and tactical prowess. Meanwhile, elk hunting, often characterized by its majestic and powerful presence, offers an exhilarating experience during the rutting season when the bulls are most vocal and active. From understanding their behavior and habitat to mastering tracking techniques and shot placement, deer hunting fosters a deep connection to the wilderness and the rich traditions of conservation and stewardship.

5-Day Combo Mule Deer & Elk Hunt on Horseback
These are among the most rugged Montana elk hunts, and we often describe them as “extreme” hunts. Our hunts are guided in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Swan Valley areas of Montana off of horseback. Our guides and horses have been preparing and getting shape all summer long on backcountry pack trips; elk season is what they’ve been waiting for! We offer combination hunts in which you can target mule deer, whitetail, and bear as well. Some of our hunters have snagged a wolf tag too! Many of our elk hunters bring both their rifle and bow. Multi-weapon hunts are popular with elk hunters that like to maximize their opportunity. We like to get deep into the back country and utilize spike camps. This can get us in closer proximity to the elk for opening day. This spike camp strategy has produced many harvested elk in seasons past, but does lack the comforts of traditional hunting camps. Our elk herds are in better shape today than they have been in thirty years! Our hunting areas also support ample populations of whitetail and mule deer and color phase black bear, increasing the chances of success across species. This terrain is more challenging to hunt elk in, no doubt, no flat land here. We utilize our horses to search the front range of the Bob Marshall for elk. With exclusive access in the areas where we hunt, Swan Mountain Outfitters is able to offer archery elk hunters perhaps one of the most unique and best opportunities to bag an elk of a lifetime with a bow. As the season progresses, migration of elk begins and affords our late season elk hunters an opportunity to bag an elk at lower altitudes.

RUT Rifle Couse Deer, 5-Day
Our outfit is pleased to offer quality hunting trips for the Coues Whitetailed Deer in southern Arizona near Tucson. The Coues Deer is considered one of the most prized and most challenging deer species for North American trophy hunters. This petite deer is the smallest huntable sub-species of the whitetailed deer and weighs between 70 - 100 lbs. dressed out. Mature bucks normally have 8 total points on the rack. The minimum Coues deer score for Pope and Young is 70 inches and the minimum score for Boone and Crockett is 110 inches. The Coues Whitetail is classified under a separate category in all record books because of its small, tight rack. Even the World's Record typical Coues deer (144-1/8" B&C taken by Ed Stockwell in 1953) would not make it into the Boone and Crockett book if scored and categorized under the Eastern whitetail standards. That is the reason for the separate category for this unique deer species. Hunters that have taken all the species in the "deer slam" usually consider the Coues deer one of the most rewarding and most beautiful trophies. Our Coues hunts are conducted in the vast, rugged desert mountains of southeastern Arizona, with Tucson being the closest major city. The hunting technique for Coues deer involves choosing a good vantage point and spending hours glassing through high-powered binoculars and spotting scopes. The Coues bucks may be spotted over a mile away. Once a trophy Coues buck is located, the spot and stalk method is used to get within shooting range. The canyons where Coues deer live are usually big and open. Rifle hunters should be prepared for shooting distances from 200 yards to 500 yards, if the need arises. Bow hunters typically take shots at ranges from 30 to 60 yards, since it is really open terrain. Because of the topography, high-powered riflescopes on top of lightweight flat-shooting rifles with a bipod are a "must have." Recommended rifle calibers are the .25-06 up to .300 Magnums. We do not recommend smaller calibers. Rifle season hunts are conducted during three timeframes, which are: late October, early November, and late December. Our Archery Coues hunts are conducted during the month of January when they are in full rut. SUCCESS RATES: We are proud to say that many of our rifle Coues seasons have ended with a 100% success rate! Nearly all of our past Coues hunters have been presented with opportunity.

Archery Javelina & Coues Deer Combo, 2x1
Southern Arizona is home to the Javelina. Hunting seasons for this critter are during January through February. Javelina can be one of the most enjoyable game animals to hunt in Arizona. They are not pigs, nor are they even in the pig family. They are peccaries. Javelina are gregarious animals that live in a tight-knit family group of around 5 to 15 animals. The javelina groups are territorial with a home range of about a square mile and a half. The common name is the "collared peccary" because of a white ring of hair that circles the neck region. Javelina appear to be larger than they really are, but in actuality, they only weigh 35-60 pounds dressed-out. Trophy Coues Deer Hunt in Arizona, Rifle Hunt, 1x1, Guiding But No Lodging
The Coues deer is the smallest species of the whitetail family and also known as the "Gray Ghost" of the desert. Since the Coues deer is so small, they will vanish before your eyes, even in the Arizona open terrain. Due to their natural predators within their habitat, Coues deer are always on edge. In order to hunt this elusive animal, a great pair of high power 15x binoculars with a tripod for glassing is a must. Make sure you are in good physically hiking condition to endure the rugged Arizona terrain. Rifle seasons are in October, November, and December. Late December these rutting bucks will be busy rut mode chasing other bucks away from their doe and will make the hunt somewhat easier. The rifle season will be cool to cold temperatures and the bucks can be up and about all day. You will mostly see them up in the mornings sunbathing and during the days bedded up in the shadows. Shots can be as close as 300 yards out to 800+ yards. Knowing this, the hunter must start practicing long range practice before the season starts. It would be wise to shoot with a bi-pod or shooting stick in different positions—you never know where that huge buck will appear and you must be ready. 6-day hunt

Western Illinois Free Range Whitetail Hunt - Archery Late Season
The acres your hunt will take place on are very strictly managed. South Fork hunters are required to harvest at minimum 140 inch, 3 ½ year old bucks. Having these practices in place for years has only made a good thing that much better. In addition to the doe’s that our hunters harvest, we take heard surveys that enable us to go through late season and remove doe’s in highly populated areas. As a whole – the areas you will be hunting have an excellent doe-to-buck ratio (2 or 3-to-1). Hunter to acre ratio is also very important. Low pressure is a huge part of harvesting mid-west whitetail deer. Here at South Fork, we keep ample ground for the numbers of hunters we run, with some farms not being hunted for entire seasons. This is all to ensure South Fork ground will remain the best of the best. We take stand location very seriously. This is crucial when getting close to giant Illinois bruisers. The wind and thermals are taken into consideration on every set. The stand set ups are for stealth entry and exits. Stand location is one of the biggest keys to a successful hunt- second only to having a piece of great managed whitetail ground. All stands are set by South Fork Guides that have years of experience and the bucks to prove it! The rule of thumb we live by is “if we wouldn’t hunt it, we won’t hang it!” We are as excited to get you into the stand that we hung, as you are to be in it. It’s like we are hunting with you. Our sets consist of hang–on’s with climbing sticks (20′-25′); ladder stands (16′-20′); shooting houses (7′-10′); and assorted ground blinds. We utilize over 70+ Shadowhunter Blinds to provide our gun hunters with a comfortable and solid shooting setup. We put you up close and personal, it’s just a matter of time before a big shooter reveals himself. All hunts are completely free range with no high fences in the “Golden Triangle” of Illinois- Pike, Adams, and Hancock counties. All South Fork properties provide the benefits of a long-standing Quality Deer Management Plan and uphold a Pope & Young deer scoring minimum of 140 inches or better. Trail cameras cover almost every property for the majority of the growing season giving you the chance to see a potential trophy before stepping foot in the woods. Field dressing services and deer transportation are provided by our guides if desired. Our guides will assist in meat & trophy care and preparation for shipping

Eastern Colorado Mule White-Tailed Deer Hunt #1 Pintada)
The Eastern Colorado Mule & Whitetails Deer Hunts are on a drawing with limited number of licenses available. The limited number of hunters has resulted in an increase in both the number and quality of our deer. When you draw a tag in our area it is good for either a Mule Deer or a Whitetail Hunt. Colorado has a preference point system and also has a percentage of licenses allotted to the landowner. This system has enabled our hunters to draw a tag with high success using the landowner preference we have available to us. Most regular season hunts you can draw allow you to hunt with us using our landowner preference. Late season hunts will take points in addition to our landowner preference. This year we will again have available a number of landowner vouchers which will enable you to purchase a license without having to draw a tag or use any accumulated preference points.

Sitka Blacktail Deer Hunt in Southeast Alaska, from a 78-Foot Yacht
Hunting deer in the rainforest of Southeast Alaska is an experience in deer hunting unlike any other. The elusive sitka blacktail deer may not share the notoriety of their larger cousins, the Whitetail and Mule deer, but a hunt for sitka blacktail in southeast Alaska will provide the challenge and adventure that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Our hunts take place in either November, during the peak of the rut, or early December when the deer are post rut. Rut conditions, snow, and weather tend to bring the deer down near sea level, where they can be hunted on the beaches and grass flats which hold some of their favorite food. Hunting is also conducted amongst the towering trees of the Tongass National Forest. Still hunting, along with walk then sit style is highly effective when used in conjunction with calling. A sitka deer will often respond to a doe or fawn bleat, often times closing to a very close range. We recommend that all travelers get full-flex tickets as you are traveling to the Last Frontier and weather will at times play a big part in getting in or out of Alaska. Glacier Guides’ deer hunters fly into Juneau, Alaska. From there, hunters proceed to a pre-designated Air Charter company, to be flown via floatplane to our vessel awaiting your arrival in the field. Please take note of the travel details and dates included on your contract for booking of flights. Call us with any questions to ensure you are arriving and departing as necessary.

3 Day / 4 Night Archery Deer Hunt With Lodging (RUT)
Guided Whitetail Deer hunts are available with options for archery, shotgun, rifle, or handgun. Hunters are typically stationed in blinds or stands, where they remain until the guide—who continues working in the surrounding area—returns. It has been observed that while a lone hunter may struggle to outsmart a mature buck, a coordinated approach using two hunters at a distance can dramatically increase the chances of harvesting a trophy. This is a three-day, four-night hunt based out of a lodge located in Clinton Falls, Indiana. Accommodations include lodging and daily meals—breakfast, a packed lunch, and dinner. The hunt allows for the harvest of one buck and includes field dressing as well as transportation of the animal from the field back to the lodge. Local taxidermy and processing services are available nearby for an additional fee.

Western Illinois Free Range Whitetail Hunt - Muzzleloader
