About Our Rocky Mountain Elk Hunts

Intro to this species—landscapes, strategies, costs, and comforts.

Overview

The Rocky Mountain Elk (Cervus canadensis) is a majestic and iconic species native to the mountainous regions of North America, renowned for its impressive antlers, which can span up to four feet and are shed annually. Males, known as bulls, are particularly distinguished by their vocalizations, including the haunting bugle during the rut, which serves to attract mates and establish dominance. These animals are typically found in dense forests and open meadows, where they forage on a diet of grasses, leaves, and bark. When hunting Rocky Mountain Elk, enthusiasts should note their keen sense of hearing and smell, necessitating a strategic approach that emphasizes stealth and the use of natural cover. The hunting season often coincides with their mating season in the fall, providing an exhilarating chase amidst breathtaking landscapes. Successful hunters value patience, knowledge of elk behavior, and proficient marksmanship, making the pursuit of this noble creature a rewarding challenge that embodies the spirit of the wilderness.

Typical Hunt Features

Rocky Mountain Elk hunts typically span five to seven days during archery, muzzleloader, high-country rifle, and general rifle seasons on both public and private lands. Outfitters provide one-on-one or one-on-two guide ratios and supply fully outfitted camps—from backcountry wall tents and horse-packed drop camps to ranch lodges and cabins with home-cooked meals. Access methods include horseback, ATV or 4WD vehicles, with hunters logging saddle time or hiking into timberline meadows, ridges and high-elevation basins. Strategies focus on spot-and-stalk, glassing with spotting scopes, and calling rutting bulls during the bugle season. Most packages cover field-dressing, meat packing or processing, and basic trophy care, delivering a fair-chase experience across varied mountain terrain.

Common Amenities

Rocky Mountain elk hunts typically offer a mix of back-country canvas tent camps and full-service mountain lodges. In tent camps, heavy-duty wall tents are outfitted with wood-burning stoves for heat and simple cots for sleeping. Lodge stays feature private or shared rooms with real beds and modern climate-control systems to ensure comfort in any season. Regardless of camp style, hearty meals are provided daily, and accommodations are positioned close to prime elk habitat for quick access to the field.

Montana Combo Elk + Mule Deer Hunt Using 4x4 Trucks, 5.5 Days, 70K Private Acres
This is a unique hunt on private land where hunts are conducted out of 4x4 trucks, making it feasible for elderly folks or those with difficulty walking. We have been operating out of our Candy Dan Camp for over 25 years. Constructed on the private ranch we hunt, located some 65 miles south of Great Falls, our base camp consists of a newly constructed cook house built in 2013, equipped with a full kitchen, buffet table, couches, hot and cold water, and a custom dining table for up to 12 hunters, three cabins for sleeping quarters for the hunters, a sauna house, and sleeping quarters for the guides. Camp is equipped with propane heat, electricity in all cabins, a full shower/sauna, and WIFI! DL Elk Outfitters conducts guided rifle elk hunts on over 70,000 private acres in the Big Belt Mountains in central Montana. These private lands are home to some of Montana’s largest resident elk herds. We are not dependent on migrations or heavy snows to push the elk out of areas we cannot hunt, giving our hunters a high chance of success. The country is rich in large grass meadows for feed to ridges and draws of timber, making excellent habitat. Elk hunters access the hunting areas by 4-wheel drive vehicles and hiking to vantage spots and glassing for bull elk. (No horses or pack strings here.) Only bull elk with brow tines are legal in our area to harvest, and that means 5, 6, and 7 point bulls are the norm here rather than the exception. Elk hunters average glassing more than 100 elk per week on our hunts. Mule Deer and Whitetail Deer are available on all elk hunts and make for a great combo. Our hunting leases, comfortable cabins, elevations under 6500 feet, and 4-wheel drive access make this an area any hunter, regardless of age or physical condition, can hunt. Our rifle elk hunts are all guided, 2 hunters per guide unless prior arrangements are made. Elk and deer licenses are on a draw basis and have to be applied for to the state of Montana by March 15. Draw rates in recent years have been 100%.

Muzzleloader Bull Elk Hunt on 50K Acre of Private Land; Use Vehicles; Units 6, 16, 17, 171; 5-Day
You will be able to hunt four private ranches (55,000 acres) along with approximately one thousand acres of BLM land, reaching an altitude of well over 10,000 feet. Our elk hunts are fair chase, and the terrain and scenery are breathtaking. With only 36% of Jackson County being private property, pressured elk to seek out the protection of private lands for safety, which is where the majority of our hunting takes place. Our ranches are on the fringes of the timber and offer significant agriculture opportunities, making this prime free-range elk habitat very productive for our hunters. The elk herd stands at almost 20 bulls for 100 cow elk. The Colorado Department of Wildlife’s studies show this ratio is increasing, which means your opportunity for a bull is significantly higher than public lands throughout other parts of Colorado. In 2018, studies showed that the harvest success rate for all elk across the state was around 18%; in the last five years, our success rate was far better than the state average. Specifically, you will be hunting just outside of the towns of Rand and Coalmont, CO. Rand is located about 3 hours Northwest of Denver at the base of Parkview Mountain at the south end of the North Park Region of Colorado. Coalmont is located 25 miles to the west of Rand and sits at the Eastern end of the Rabbit Ears Pass. The North Park Region is surrounded by mountain crests of the Park Range, Medicine Bow Range, and Never Summer Range. This area offers open sagebrush country and willow flat marshes surrounded by aspen, fir, and pine forests, reaching elevations beyond the tree line. With breathtaking views of Parkview Mountain to the south, the Never Summer Mountain Range and the Continental Divide to the southeast, and the rugged Buffalo Peaks to the west, you will truly find your place in the world!

5-Day Elk Hunt (Private Land - General Area) - 5 Full Days of Hunting
There are few things that rival the excitement of hunting elk during the month of September. The bugle is a sound you’ll remember for the rest of your life. We are fortunate to have access to some of the best archery elk hunting in the state of Wyoming. Archery elk hunts begin around the second week of September and go through the end of the month. There isn’t a better archery hunt in North America than hunting rutting elk. We typically experience very high rates of opportunity; in the fall of 2023, 100% of our archery elk hunters had opportunities with an 80% success rate. At Big Horn Outfitters, we take pride in being hardcore bowhunters ourselves and we have the staff, skills and hunting ground to get the job done. Archery elk hunts are 6 day hunts and can be extended for an additional daily fee.

RUT Firearms Bull Elk Hunt, 6-Day
We offer elk hunting primarily on the Coconino National Forest with Flagstaff being the closest major city (sometimes other areas on a case by case basis). The most popular elk hunting timeframe is during the rutting season when bulls and cows are vocal. We conduct an archery rut hunt from mid to late September and an early firearms/muzzleloader rut hunt at the end of September through early October. This is the main part of the rut, so there is usually nonstop action on these hunts. Bulls can fall victim to a call during this timeframe. Nothing gets the blood pumping more than hearing a monster bull elk answer your guide's calls. If luck is on your side, the bull might come charging in for an opportunity to release an arrow. Our archery and early muzzleloader or early rifle elk hunts are conducted mostly in higher timber elevations of 7000 to 8500 ft. Even though hunting is done in September and October, the weather during these hunts are very enjoyable. It can range from 65-75 degrees in the day to 35-45 degrees at night. Complimentary accommodations are in tent camps or camping trailer, depending upon the number of hunters in camp and feasibility. The camp and the hunt area is accessed by SUV or truck and hunting is done on foot. In most cases, elk live in mountainous terrain, so hunters should be physically prepared. Hunters are encouraged to condition themselves to the best of their ability in order to increase their odds for success. If you are looking for a horseback hunt, this is NOT the hunt for you. These three early hunts are placed during the rut when elk are vocal.

7-Day Dual Weapon Rut Elk Hunt
These are among the most rugged Montana elk hunts, and we often describe them as “extreme” hunts. Our hunts are guided in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Swan Valley areas of Montana off of horseback. Our guides and horses have been preparing and getting shape all summer long on backcountry pack trips; elk season is what they’ve been waiting for! Archery hunting elk, requiring close proximity to the animal, is, by its very nature, quite different from hunting these animals using a rifle. Successful archery hunts require excellent calling abilities and guides who know the difference between techniques utilized for archery versus rifle hunts. Our elk herds are in better shape today than they have been in thirty years! Our hunting areas also support ample populations of whitetail and mule deer and color phase black bear, increasing the chances of success across species. This terrain is more challenging to hunt elk in, no doubt, no flat land here. We utilize our horses to search the front range of the Bob Marshall for elk. With exclusive access in the areas where we hunt, Swan Mountain Outfitters is able to offer archery elk hunters perhaps one of the most unique and best opportunities to bag an elk of a lifetime with a bow. As the season progresses, migration of elk begins and affords our late season elk hunters an opportunity to bag an elk at lower altitudes.

Colorado Combo Elk & Deer
All hunts are on PRIVATE PROPERTY located in Southeastern and South central Colorado. We offer both regular and late season hunts on the plains. We have over 300,000 acres available to hunt on these ranches. Lodging on the ranches is in comfortable houses. These houses are part of the ranch and have showers and electricity, making a very nice hunting camp with home cooked meals and excellent guides. It is also possible to combine an Elk hunt or a Bison Hunt with a Mule or Whitetail Deer Hunt. As you can tell we are Trophy Deer hunters and our success and results speak for themselves. We have a long list of hunters with B&C bucks on their wall from our Eastern Plains hunts. The bucks are here and we know how to hunt them. We are constantly finding and opening new country for our clients.

5-Day Combo Mule Deer & Elk Hunt on Horseback
These are among the most rugged Montana elk hunts, and we often describe them as “extreme” hunts. Our hunts are guided in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Swan Valley areas of Montana off of horseback. Our guides and horses have been preparing and getting shape all summer long on backcountry pack trips; elk season is what they’ve been waiting for! We offer combination hunts in which you can target mule deer, whitetail, and bear as well. Some of our hunters have snagged a wolf tag too! Many of our elk hunters bring both their rifle and bow. Multi-weapon hunts are popular with elk hunters that like to maximize their opportunity. We like to get deep into the back country and utilize spike camps. This can get us in closer proximity to the elk for opening day. This spike camp strategy has produced many harvested elk in seasons past, but does lack the comforts of traditional hunting camps.

7-Day Archery Elk Hunt
Archery hunts necessitate minimizing overexposure of hunting areas and minimizing scent control and noise. For these reasons, we only take two hunters to each of our “archery only” designated areas. We have experimented with various styles of guided archery elk hunts and we believe we have landed upon an offering that delivers the ultimate archery elk hunting experience in Montana. Even though the season is actually longer, we focus solely on the time frame surrounding the rut to maximize our opportunity: we offer three sessions of 7-day archery only hunts. Note that this boils down to 5 days of solid hunting as the rest of the time is spent getting to and from the area. We employ two-on-one guiding as we have found it is the best way to maximize our hunters' opportunities to be successful. With limited space, our archery elk hunts are the first to book up. We typically have been booked two years in advance, so don’t wait! Fully Guided Elk Hunt, 5-Night
This is a five night hunt. You provide your license, personal gear, and prefered method of hunting. We will help with all of the remaining details. Our ratio is one guide per two hunters. Hunters should expect a minimum of 2 hours in the saddle on all of our hunts. Most early season hunt camps are set at timberline (11,400 feet), or higher. Once we reach main camp, hunters can walk out of the tents to hunt, or choose to hike or ride horseback to a further destination.
